Renewed collaboration to advance hydrogen fuel cell technology.
Focus on shared powertrain development to reduce costs.
Hydrogen-powered BMW model expected by 2028.
Both companies aim to build hydrogen fueling infrastructure.
Collaboration addresses challenges like limited fueling stations and high production costs.
Toyota and BMW have partnered again to advance hydrogen fuel cell technology. They signed a memorandum of understanding to accelerate the development of next-generation zero-emission vehicles. BMW is expected to release its first hydrogen-powered car in 2028.
Hydrogen is the most abundant element, but marketing fuel cell vehicles has been tough due to limited fueling stations and low sales. In early 2024, only 322 units were sold in the US, marking an 82% drop compared to the previous year.

BMW and Toyota are now teaming up to tackle these issues by developing a shared powertrain to lower costs and standardize components. They're also planning to build hydrogen fueling stations. The two companies first collaborated on hydrogen vehicles in 2012.
In their new partnership, Toyota and BMW will jointly create a shared powertrain featuring third-generation fuel cells for their future passenger vehicles. This will complement their existing range of plug-in hybrids, battery electric, and internal combustion engine cars.
Although BMW’s hydrogen-powered model is still in development, it is expected to be part of the upcoming Neue Klasse lineup, which supports FCEV architecture. Toyota will also develop its own fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) lineup using the shared powertrain.

BMW Chairman Oliver Zipse praised the launch of the first fuel cell vehicles from a premium brand as a major achievement in automotive technology. Toyota's Koji Sato highlighted the advantages of working with BMW, emphasizing their mutual dedication to advancing technology.
BMW and Toyota's renewed collaboration aims to accelerate the development of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, addressing current challenges in infrastructure and costs. By combining efforts on shared powertrain systems and building hydrogen fueling stations, both automakers are working towards a future with more sustainable, zero-emission vehicles. This partnership marks a significant step in advancing hydrogen technology in the automotive industry.
