The Toyota Hilux EV pickup truck, set to debut in Thailand by late 2025, has entered its final testing phase before mass production. Despite earlier reports suggesting Toyota might abandon the project, Pras Ganesh, Toyota Motor Asia's executive vice president, has confirmed that Hilux EV production will commence before the end of next year.

He also showed interest in manufacturing the Hilux Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) in Thailand, where pickup trucks dominate car sales. This decision highlights Toyota's commitment to the region, where it sold over 30,000 hybrid cars last year, capturing an 11.5% share of total sales.
The Toyota Hilux EV is anticipated to feature a dual-motor setup and a standard 4WD system, positioning it as a competitor to the Isuzu D-Max EV, which boasts a 177 hp/325 Nm powertrain and a 66.9-kWh battery showcased at the Bangkok International Motor Show. The Hilux EV is expected to be on par with its rivals in terms of performance upon release.

Although Toyota lags behind industry leaders like China's BYD and Tesla in the EV market, it has successfully leveraged the demand for hybrid vehicles, capitalizing on its expertise in petrol-electric hybrids. Pras Ganesh highlighted Toyota's optimism for the growth of hybrid sales in Southeast Asian markets, particularly in Thailand, despite facing competition from rivals like Great Wall Motor.
Toyota is making significant strides in the electric and hybrid vehicle markets, with the Toyota Hilux EV set to debut in Thailand by the end of 2025. Despite trailing behind leaders like BYD and Tesla, Toyota's strong performance in the hybrid sector and its commitment to expanding in Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand, underscore its strategic focus and potential for growth amidst rising competition.
