[UAE shoppers are choosing value, trust and reliability over brand loyalty.]
DUBAI, UAE —UAE brand loyalty is shifting as shoppers increasingly prioritize value, reliability and transparency over brand names alone. Consumers are researching products, comparing prices and reading reviews before deciding where to spend.
Research from GfK indicates that 38% of UAE consumers have traded down from name brands to cheaper alternatives, while 31% prefer purchasing second-hand goods rather than new products.
These figures point toward a growing focus on affordability and perceived value. However, the shift does not mean UAE shoppers have abandoned established brands.
In fact, 43% of consumers still prefer well-known brands, largely because they associate them with quality and reliability. At the same time, 48% spend significant time researching brands before making major purchases.
This creates an interesting contradiction: consumers still trust established names, but they are no longer willing to choose them automatically.
Better value for money
Proven product quality
Reliable after-sales service
Positive customer reviews
Transparent pricing
Strong brand credibility
Convenient purchasing experiences
For years, premium positioning and brand recognition were powerful tools for winning customers in the UAE. Today, consumers increasingly want evidence behind the promises.
A familiar logo may generate initial interest, but reviews, recommendations, service quality and a company's track record can have a much greater influence on the final purchase decision.
This is particularly important in categories where consumers face greater financial or practical risks, including healthcare, education, electronics, automotive products and other regulated sectors.
Consumers increasingly want brands to demonstrate:
“Don't just tell me you're reliable — show me.”
Online reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations have therefore become critical parts of the UAE consumer journey.
Brand switching in the UAE isn't just about finding the cheapest option. Shoppers increasingly compare price, quality and reliability to judge true value. A low price may attract buyers, but lasting loyalty depends on whether the product delivers what it promises.
Consumers are willing to pay more when the benefits are clear and the quality is proven. This makes value for money a key factor shaping brand loyalty in the UAE.
Price + Quality + Reliability + Service = Perceived Value
Brands that communicate this equation clearly have a better opportunity to turn first-time buyers into repeat customers.
Trust is becoming more important, but product performance remains a major factor in technology-focused categories.
This is particularly visible in smartphones, electronics, telecom services and connected devices, where consumers can easily compare specifications, prices and reviews online.
Research into mobile-brand switching has found that factors such as technological advantages and competitive pricing can strongly influence consumers' decisions to remain with or leave a provider.
For technology brands, simply being familiar is therefore no longer enough.
Consumers increasingly ask:
Is the technology genuinely better?
Does the product offer useful features?
Is the price competitive?
What are existing customers saying?
How good is the after-sales support?
The easier these questions are to answer, the easier it becomes for consumers to make switching decisions.
The UAE's highly connected retail environment is accelerating this transformation.
Consumers can now compare prices, check specifications, watch product demonstrations, read reviews and explore competing brands within minutes.
Digital payments and app-based commerce have also reduced friction in the buying process.
As a result, switching from one brand to another can require very little effort.
For brands, this creates both an opportunity and a challenge. A competitor no longer needs years of traditional advertising to attract customers. A compelling product, competitive price and strong online reputation can quickly influence purchasing decisions.
The current shift can be summarized through five major factors:
Factor | Why It Matters |
Value for Money | Consumers want quality that justifies the price |
Trust | Reviews, reputation and reliability reduce purchase risk |
Product Quality | Performance remains critical, especially in technology |
Customer Service | Strong after-sales support can build long-term loyalty |
Transparency | Clear pricing and honest communication strengthen credibility |
For companies operating in the UAE, the message from this research is clear: brand loyalty can no longer be bought through image alone. Consumers are switching brands when they sense a mismatch between price and value, when a competitor demonstrates stronger reliability, or when trust — built through transparency, reviews, and consistent service — is lacking.
The brands most likely to retain UAE customers, researchers suggest, will be those that treat every touchpoint as a chance to prove their credibility, rather than simply assert it.
