Volkswagen has introduced the Tharu XR to bolster its position in the Chinese SUV market. Produced via the Volkswagen-SAIC joint venture, this new model is situated between the larger Tharu models and the T-Cross. Recently, the automaker shared only exterior images of the Tharu XR SUV.

The Tharu XR, built on the MQB A0 platform like the T-Cross and Taigun, measures 4,355 mm in length, 1,762 mm in width, and 1,605 mm in height. This makes it about 134 mm longer than the Taigun, while height and width remain similar. Its wheelbase of 2,651 mm matches that of the T-Cross and Taigun, ensuring a consistent structural foundation across these Volkswagen models.
Volkswagen plans to offer the Tharu XR SUV with two powertrain options: a turbocharged 1.5L petrol engine and a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol variant, both generating 158 hp and 250 Nm of torque. The turbocharged engine will be paired with a 7-speed automatic DSG transmission.

The Tharu XR features body panels and doors similar to the Taigun, enhanced by a redesigned front bumper, headlamps, and grille. Its premium look is emphasized by a larger rear bumper with contrasting accents and connected, dark-tinted tail lamps.
Volkswagen currently has no plans to launch the Tharu XR SUV in the UAE.
Volkswagen's introduction of the Tharu XR SUV aims to solidify its presence in the Chinese SUV market. By incorporating familiar design elements and offering versatile powertrain options, the Tharu XR builds on the MQB A0 platform's strengths. Although it showcases an appealing aesthetic and advanced features, Volkswagen currently has no plans to release the Tharu XR in the UAE.
