Volkswagen is reportedly preparing to bring its iconic nameplates with a future-ready electric powertrain configuration. Changing the naming strategy, Volkswagen has announced to use the prefix "ID" before the old nameplates. As a result, the upcoming iconic nameplates with an electric powertrain will be named like ID.Polo and ID.Polo GTI. Currently presented in concept version, the production spec vehicles will be showcased in 2026. However, before their debut next year, the upcoming Volkswagen electric vehicles will be showcased at the Munich Motor Show.

The Volkswagen ID.Polo is underpinned by the MEB platform and expected to house a 38kWh battery pack, with an optional 56kWh unit. The battery pack will ensure a maximum range of 450 km on a single charge. While the charging capabilities of the electric Polo are expected to be up to 125kW, it will be offered as a performance-focused electric version of the iconic Polo hatchback. However, there will also be an all-electric hot hatch ID.Polo GTI that will equip a 226 hp electric motor as well as ID.Polo GTI Clubsport variant with 286 hp and a 400 hp dual-motor configuration, with AWD versions featuring 'R' badge.

The production-spec hatchback will borrow design elements from the concept version. It will have slim headlights and taillights along with a spacious glasshouse. To make the exterior profile even more imposing, the GTI version will add sporty character to ID.Polo GTI, including slightly bulging wheel arches, a small front diffuser, split spoilers mounted on the boot, and dual cutouts in the rear bumper. Moreover, the ID Polo GTI will come with larger alloy wheels with a unique design.
In terms of design dimensions, the Volkswagen ID.Polo will measure 4,053 mm in length, 1,816 mm in width, and 1,530 mm in height, making it comparatively larger than the international spec ICE version of Polo.
Inside the cabin, the ID.Polo is expected to feature a 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 10.9-inch digital instrument cluster. It will have physical buttons and switches for the audio and climate control systems. As Volkswagen aims to use more environmentally friendly materials, the upcoming Polo electric is likely to have high-quality, sustainable materials and will not have glue or hard plastic inside the cabin.
