Scout Motors, under Volkswagen, is reintroducing the classic Scout brand with the Terra Pickup and Traveler SUV.
Both models will be available as fully electric, with optional petrol-powered range extenders for extended range.
The Traveler targets the Land Rover Defender, and the Terra will compete with models like the Chevy Silverado and Tesla Cybertruck.
Traveler accelerates 0-100 kph in 3.5 seconds, with dual-motor four-wheel drive and charging support up to 350 kW.
Inspired by original Scout design with durable exterior features and cabins echoing the Scout II, plus advanced infotainment and OTA updates.
Forty-four years after the last International Scout was produced, the legendary off-roader remains popular worldwide. Now, Volkswagen-owned Scout Motors has unveiled its all-electric Terra Pickup and Traveler SUV in near-final versions, bringing the iconic brand back to life.
The Scout Traveler electric SUV is set to compete with the Land Rover Defender, while the Terra pickup will rival the Chevrolet Silverado, Tesla Cybertruck, and Rivian R1T. Both models feature a unique body-on-frame platform, separate from Volkswagen’s PPE and MEB platforms. Batteries and electronics will be provided by Canadian company Magna.
Originally designed as fully electric models, the Scout Traveler and Terra will now offer optional petrol-powered range extenders in response to concerns about EV range and charging availability. With these extenders, both models can travel over 800 km between fill-ups, an increase from 560 km.
Scout hasn't confirmed the battery size, but the platform can support charging speeds up to 350 kW. Both the Traveler and Terra come with a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive setup. The Traveler reaches 0-100 kph in just 3.5 seconds, though power figures haven't been disclosed.
Inspired by the original Scout, both models showcase a bold design with a strong shoulder line, long hood, short overhangs, skid plates, reinforced bumpers, and body-on-frame construction.
The cabins take inspiration from the original Scout II, blending retro style with modern amenities. Above the physical controls, there’s a central touchscreen for climate and other functions. Both models also feature remote diagnostics and support over-the-air updates.
The Terra and Traveler will be built in South Carolina at Scout’s factory, where Volkswagen plans to boost production to 200,000 units per year. This move highlights the company’s commitment to meeting the rising demand for EVs.
Volkswagen-owned Scout Motors is bringing back the classic Scout brand with the fully-electric Terra Pickup and Traveler SUV, combining iconic design with modern technology. These models aim to compete with leading off-road vehicles, featuring advanced EV capabilities, optional range extenders, and will be produced in the U.S. to meet increasing EV demand.
