Andreas Mindt, Volkswagen's head designer, led the initial design efforts for the Scirocco EV, prioritizing sleek and sharp lines to enhance its visual appeal.
The anticipated launch of the VW Scirocco EV is estimated to be around 2028.
The release timeline is subject to approval from Volkswagen's CEO, Thomas Shafer, indicating ongoing development and decision-making processes within the company.
Volkswagen introduced the first generation of the Scirocco in 1974, but production halted in 2018 due to insufficient profitability. However, responding to the increasing consumer demand for electric vehicles, Volkswagen is now contemplating resurrecting the Scirocco nameplate as an electric sports car.
The project is still pending approval for production as Volkswagen assesses factors like profitability, market demand, and feasibility. However, the brand has affirmed its commitment to maintaining iconic nameplates such as R and GTR as it transitions to an electric-only future. These renowned badges will adorn forthcoming models across various categories like wagons, sedans, SUVs, and hot hatchbacks within the expanding VW ID lineup.

The upcoming Scirocco is expected to utilize a modified version of the PPE platform derived from the electric-powered Boxster/Cayman. This platform will offer flexibility in accommodating different drive layouts and wheelbase lengths while prioritizing a low floor height and sleek door sills for a sporty appearance. Referred to as E-Core by Porsche, the platform situates the battery behind the cabin and within the center tunnel, reminiscent of earlier mid-engined Boxsters.
The Scirocco is projected to provide around 300 bhp in a single-motor configuration and over 400 bhp in a dual-motor setup, effectively succeeding the turbo four-cylinder Scirocco R.
Andreas Mindt, Volkswagen's head designer, began designing the Scirocco EV's initial concepts in early last year. Mindt underscored the importance of the Scirocco's sleek and sharp lines in elevating its visual attractiveness. The launch of the VW Scirocco EV is anticipated around 2028, pending approval from Volkswagen CEO Thomas Shafer.
