  • Federal and local authorities will collaborate on fee collection, with the Ministry of Finance overseeing the process.

The UAE Cabinet has established a new tariff for EV charging under Resolution No. 81 of 2024. This structure aims to standardize rates, like petrol pricing, with fees adjusted monthly. The Council of Ministers can revise these fees as necessary.

Charging rates have now been set at Dh1.20 per kWh (plus VAT) for 'express' services and Dh0.70 per kWh (plus VAT) for 'slow' services. These new EV charging fees will take effect 60 days after publication, starting on September 6. Earlier this year, a government-owned EV charging network was launched in the UAE.

In May 2024, the UAE Electric Vehicle Network introduced 100 free charging spots and installed fast-charging units nationwide. These fast-charging units will be free to use until the end of 2024, with pricing details for their use after that time to be announced later. This initiative aims to encourage UAE residents to switch to electric vehicles.

Federal authorities will collect the new EV charging fees using methods set by the Ministry of Finance. In each Emirate, local authorities will enforce these fees. To ensure smooth implementation, the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure will collaborate with the Ministry of Finance to issue necessary procedures or decisions.

Verdict

The UAE is taking significant steps to standardize EV charging fees across the country, ensuring a consistent and regulated approach. By coordinating efforts between federal and local authorities, the government aims to streamline the fee collection process and encourage the adoption of electric vehicles through well-structured policies and infrastructure development.
