Toyota has embarked on an ambitious project to create a new compact sports car, likely to be positioned below the GT86. This new model draws inspiration from the S-FR concept, which was unveiled at the 2015 Tokyo Auto Salon.
Toyota also plans to partner with Suzuki and Daihatsu, utilizing their combined resources and expertise to realize this vision. The new small sports car from Toyota could be launched by 2026 or 2027.

Additionally, speculation suggests that this upcoming model could mark the return of the long-awaited legendary Toyota MR2. This development represents a significant shift for Toyota, as the company is striving to diversify its lineup and cater to a broader audience.
Rumors are resurfacing about the potential revival of Toyota's Starlet hatchback under its GR sub-division. With this addition, Toyota aims to expand its lineup beyond the GR 86, GR Supra, GR Corolla, and GR Yaris. This highly anticipated model is distinct from the Maruti Baleno-based Glanza and seeks to revive the original Starlet's reputation as an affordable and sporty runabout.
A recent report hinting at the potential revival of the Starlet has sparked further speculation about the production prospects of the S-FR concept. It is anticipated that both models could be equipped with the same 152hp, 1.3-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine. By utilizing a smaller variant of the 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine found in the GR Corolla and GR Yaris hatchback, Toyota could streamline development costs and research. This approach would enhance cost efficiency and enable Toyota to offer a variety of performance options.

At the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon, Daihatsu introduced the rear-wheel-drive Vision Copen concept. This 3.8-meter-long concept will rival the Mazda MX-5 and features a design and dimensions similar to the 2015 Toyota S-FR concept. It is also equipped with a 1.3-liter powertrain, although Daihatsu has not yet disclosed detailed specifications.
This partnership could also lead to the revival of Suzuki's front-engine, RWD roadster, the Cappuccino, by capitalizing on the successful rebadging history between Suzuki and Toyota.
The collaboration between Toyota, Suzuki, and Daihatsu promises exciting developments in the automotive world. With potential revivals of iconic models like the Toyota MR2, Starlet, and Suzuki Cappuccino, alongside the introduction of new compact sports cars inspired by the S-FR concept, these partnerships aim to diversify and enhance their lineups. By leveraging shared resources and innovative designs, these automakers are set to offer a range of performance options and cater to a broader audience, marking a significant shift in their approach to the market.
