On Thursday, Tesla Inc. announced that it was recalling nearly all Cybertrucks in the US to fix the exterior panel that could be detached during driving. The issues are reportedly found in the latest series of Tesla pickup trucks.
It includes over 46,000 Tesla Cybertruck built between November 2023 to February 27 of this year, Tesla stated in its filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, making eight recalls for the pickup truck since January 2024.
While this US-based electric car manufacturer has ensured consistent deliveries for Cybertrucks, the recalled vehicles represent most of the pickups on the road. Tesla has witnessed a 50% decline in stock value due to rising competition, the aging lineup, and backlash against Elon Musk's role in federal spending cuts.
According to reports, Tesla is recalling its Cybertruck because of the risk of stainless-steel exterior trim panels detaching from the vehicle, likely to cause road accidents and increase the chances of vehicle crashes. The brand stated that the detached panel can create noise inside the car, or passengers inside can see the panel come loose or break off, but there are no collisions or injuries. Based on last year's data, the demand for Tesla's unconventional EV has weakened, possibly because of several delays.
In Tesla's overall EV sales, the Cybertrucks has negligible shares of approx.46,096 units, while the 2024 EV sales for Tesla stood at 1.79 million units. In 2024, Tesla Cybertruck topped the list of US vehicle recalls, with an estimated 5.1 million call-backs, according to a report from BizzyCar. However, over-the-air software updates solved most of the issues found in the Cybertruck.
For its latest recall, the automaker said that Tesla will replace the rail panel assembly with new ones that meet durability testing requirements. In existing variants, the EV maker has used structural adhesive to join the assembly, which can be susceptible to environmental issues. The new version will be placed using a different adhesive, reinforced with a stud welded to the stainless panel and a nut clamping the steel panel.
Tesla also said that the new trim will start producing new vehicles, while the already manufactured models in Tesla's possession will be retrofitted before their final delivery.
