Key Highlights

  • Porsche discontinues the Cayman and 718 Boxster in Europe due to new regulations.

  • Regulations require technical changes older models can't meet.

  • Gas-powered replacements not confirmed; electric 718 expected in 2025.

  • Current models were still available outside Europe.

  • Unsold cars become unregistrable after July 1.

  • Macan sales were unlikely to be affected by discontinuation.

Porsche will stop selling Cayman and 718 Boxster models in Europe due to new cybersecurity regulations effective from July 1st, 2024. These models don't comply with the updated laws due to their older electrical systems.

The new regulations require technical modifications during vehicle development, including cybersecurity-certified management systems. Managing and documenting cybersecurity risks throughout the vehicle's life cycle was not feasible during the development of the 718 models. However, current models engage with the global security community and undergo regular cybersecurity assessments.

Gas-powered replacements for the 718 models have not been confirmed yet. However, the next-generation 718, set to launch in 2025, is expected to be all-electric. While current models will still be available in markets outside of Europe, the new all-electric 718 will offer both gas and electric variants upon its release. In EU markets, new Cayman or 718 models cannot be customized, but existing stock can be purchased. Buyers should act quickly, as unsold cars will become unregistrable after July 1.

The discontinuation of the Macan introduced in 2014, and the 718, introduced in 2016, is not expected to significantly impact Macan sales due to its strong global performance compared to the 718 lineup.

Verdict

Porsche has announced the discontinuation of the Cayman and 718 Boxster models in Europe due to new cybersecurity regulations. These regulations require technical adjustments that the older models cannot accommodate. While replacements for these gas-powered models are yet to be confirmed, Porsche is expected to release an all-electric version of the 718 in 2025. Additionally, the discontinuation is not expected to greatly affect the sales of the Macan, given its strong performance in the global market.
