Nissan has revealed its next evolution of driver assistance technology, called the next-generation ProPILOT, featuring Wayve’s AI Driver software with the latest LiDAR technology to ensure a more human-like, intelligent, and safer driving experience. As per the available details, the system will make its official debut on select Nissan vehicles in Japan by FY2027.

In a demonstration test organized in downtown Tokyo, a fleet of Ariya-based electric prototype vehicles showcased how Nissan’s new generation driver assistance technology works in real-time conditions. The system has been designed to perform efficiently in complex traffic conditions, marking a significant step forward in Nissan’s mission to redefine passenger safety and advance autonomous mobility.

One of the major components included in Nissan’s new generation ProPILOT system is Wayve’s embodied AI technology, which is an advanced form of artificial intelligence designed to perceive and understand environments similar to a human driver. The AI system uses 11 cameras, 5 radars, and a next-generation LiDAR sensor placed at different angles and places across the vehicle, enabling a precise situational awareness and smooth driving even in city traffic.
With this upgrade, Nissan’s ProPilot can now anticipate movements on the road, learn and adapt according to driving situations, and react instantly to ensure safer journeys. It has been inspired by human cognition and is capable of understanding entire driving scenes that evolve during the drive, ensuring it can make better context-aware decisions.
Nissan’s Ground Truth Perception technology, which has been enhanced with the latest LiDAR technology, offers unparalleled accuracy in detecting vehicle surroundings. It has been mounted on the roof and can map the environment in 3D, even at night or during high-speed driving. With this integration, Nissan has further enhanced the vehicle and passenger safety.
Over time, Nissan’s ProPiLOT has evolved a lot, as when it was first released in 2016, it was capable of only single-lane highway driving assistance and got even more advanced and capable of multi-lane autonomous support with hands-off capabilities with the launch of ProPiLOT 2.0. To make the autonomous driving even more seamless and efficient, Nissan’s next-generation ProPILOT gets new AI and LiDAR technology.
