Ineos Fusilier: A compact 4x4 vehicle that combines the timeless appeal of the Defender with contemporary design elements and electric propulsion.
Power Versatility: Offering both EV and range-extender choices, catering to off-road capabilities in areas with limited power infrastructure.
Structural Innovations: With advancements in aerodynamic design and craftsmanship by Magna, the Fusilier sets a new standard in the 4x4 market.
Ineos introduces a new SUV featuring hybrid or EV capabilities, smaller in size compared to its predecessor, the Grenadier, and built on a unique platform. Scheduled for release in 2027, details about the vehicle remain somewhat undisclosed.
While the Ineos Grenadier is just making its debut among drivers in the UAE, and the related Quartermaster pickup is awaiting its introduction, the emerging SUV manufacturer unveils another model. The Fusilier, set for market entry in 2027, comes in both EV and plug-in hybrid variants, equipped with a range-extender powertrain.
These early previews confirm that the Fusilier draws from the design heritage of the boxy Grenadier, itself inspired by the iconic Land Rover Defender. However, the Fusilier showcases a more streamlined profile, with a smoother front end and a gently sloping windshield. Ineos suggests the possibility of incorporating active radiator grille shutters in the final production model.
Compared to the Grenadier, the Fusilier is downsized, measuring 178 inches, a significant reduction of 13 inches. Departing from the traditional ladder frame chassis, it now rests on a distinctive battery skateboard platform, blending steel and aluminum in its construction. Crafted by Magna in Austria, the same artisans responsible for manufacturing vehicles such as the Mercedes G-Class, Jaguar I-Pace, and Fisker Ocean, with previous engineering involvement in the Grenadier.
The Fusilier primarily operates as an EV, driven by electric motors positioned on each axle. However, Ineos introduces a unique twist with the unveiling of a range-extender model. In this configuration, an onboard gasoline engine serves as a generator, replenishing the battery while in motion. Unlike traditional setups, there's no direct mechanical connection to the wheels, reminiscent of designs seen in discontinued models like the Chevrolet Volt and BMW i3. While the auto industry moves away from this 'series hybrid' concept, it offers the Fusilier practicality in areas with unreliable power infrastructure.
Ineos has yet to disclose specific details regarding the gasoline engine for the range-extender, but there's speculation that it could be sourced from a reputable automaker, considering the Grenadier's use of BMW six-cylinder engines. The battery pack is manufactured in Hungary and is designed to achieve a 248-mile range in EV mode based on Europe's WLTP test standards, although EPA estimates may be closer to 200 miles. The battery for the range-extender variant, which is approximately two-thirds the size of the full EV version, offers a significant electric-only driving range.
Ineos emphasizes the Fusilier's dedication to off-road capabilities while subtly pivoting towards accommodating lifestyle users who prioritize user-friendly driving experiences. A notable change is the transition from the Grenadier's recirculating ball steering to a conventional rack and pinion system, indicating the vehicle's adaptability to diverse preferences.
Ineos is positioning the Fusilier as a versatile vehicle that caters to both off-road enthusiasts and lifestyle users seeking a more user-friendly driving experience. The shift from recirculating ball steering to a conventional rack and pinion system reflects the vehicle's adaptability to varied preferences. With its commitment to off-road prowess and enhanced usability, the Fusilier is poised to appeal to a wide range of drivers in different contexts.
