Next-gen Mercedes CLA Will Feature Electric And Hybrid Powertrains

Key Highlights

  • The next-gen Mercedes CLA is built on the new MMA platform, focusing on efficiency and inspired by the EQXX concept.

  • The CLA offers a choice of 1.5-litre four-cylinder engines with power ranging from 136 hp to 190 hp, plus a hybrid powertrain.

  • The CLA EV boasts over 700 km of range, with 800V hardware for 320kW charging, offering 10-80% charge in just 10 minutes.

  • The CLA EV features a rear electric motor with up to 272 hp, with a 4Matic version offering an additional 108 hp front motor.

  • Available with 85kWh or 58kWh batteries, with the larger unit featuring silicon oxide anodes for 20% more energy density.

As interest in EVs slows, many automakers are slowing their transition plans, though they still believe in the future dominance of electric vehicles. Mercedes-Benz is offering both internal combustion and electric versions of the next CLA, providing more options for buyers.

The new 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine in the CLA, designed for the MMA platform, is compact and modular, scalable for larger uses. With closely spaced cylinders, a combined gearbox, integrated exhaust manifolds, an inverter unit, and an electric motor, it's 17% smaller and lighter than Mercedes' current four-cylinder engines.

Opting for a four-cylinder over a three-cylinder improves refinement, with extra insulation reducing vibrations and noise.

The CLA’s 1.5-liter engine will produce either 163 hp or 136 hp, with the 4Matic version reaching up to 190 hp. The hybrid powertrain is designed to offer fuel efficiency similar to that of diesel engines, thanks to a 27-hp electric motor powered by a 1.3 kWh 48V battery. In EV-only mode, the hybrid can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h, with charging through recuperation.

The system eliminates the need for a traditional starter motor, making the start-stop function seamless. Future sportier versions may deliver more power.

The upcoming CLA is the first Mercedes model to use the new MMA platform, designed for efficiency and inspired by the EQXX concept, which achieves 13.5 km per kWh. The CLA EV set a record at Italy's Nardo ring, covering 3,717 km in 24 hours. Its drivetrain offers 93% battery-to-wheel efficiency, aiming for 8.3 kWh/km in real-world use.

With 800V hardware, it supports 320kW charging, taking just 10 minutes to charge from 10-80%. The CLA offers 85 kWh or 58 kWh battery options, with the larger battery featuring silicon oxide anodes for 20% more energy density, exceeding rivals like the BMW i5 and Tesla Model 3 with a range of over 700 km.
