Lexus is preparing to launch a new V8-powered sports car, possibly named the LFR, as a successor to the iconic LFA. Prototypes of this upcoming model have been spotted undergoing extensive testing at Belgium's Spa-Francorchamps racing circuit.

The prototype emits a unique sound, suggesting it houses a potent twin-turbocharged V8 engine, aiming to deliver exceptional performance akin to its iconic predecessor, the LFA. This underscores Lexus's dedication to advancing luxury sports car engineering benchmarks.

The Gazoo Racing motorsport division aims to ready the new Lexus V8 sports car by 2026 for elite-level competition. According to FIA regulations, GT3 race cars must derive their external design from a related production model. This requirement means a high-performance version of the sports car is anticipated within the next two years. Lexus's move from track to street highlights its strategy of using motorsport expertise to enhance performance-oriented road vehicles.

While detailed specifications for the Lexus GT3 racer are still under wraps, GT3 regulations offer flexibility with weight limits capped at 1300 kilograms and power outputs ranging between 500 to 600 horsepower for competing cars.

Aston Martin, Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG, BMW, Ferrari, Ford, and Porsche are prominent manufacturers of GT3 customer cars. Lexus's inclusion in this prestigious group signifies its expansion into motorsport and commitment to meeting the rigorous demands of GT3 racing with a competitive contender.

By 2026, Gazoo Racing plans to debut the GT3 model, adhering to FIA regulations. The forthcoming road version aims to uphold the legacy of high-performance sports cars like the LC 500, LFA, and RC F.

Lexus has ceased production of the LC and RC coupés in Europe without immediate plans for replacements, yet maintains a strong focus on developing performance vehicles. They are slated to produce the Electrified Sport concept by the decade's end, featuring a carbon fiber monocoque akin to Toyota's GR GT3 concept. This hints at the possibility of introducing two related sports cars within the next five years, each with distinct powertrain options.

Verdict

Lexus has halted the LC and RC coupé models in Europe with no immediate successors planned, emphasizing their commitment to advancing performance vehicles. The forthcoming Electrified Sport concept, anticipated by the end of the decade, aligns with Toyota's GR GT3 concept, suggesting a dual approach to introducing new sports cars with varied powertrain technologies in the coming years.
