GM Super Cruise Explained: Why Hands-Free Driving Isn’t Available in the UAE Yet

GM’s Super Cruise is one of the world’s most advanced hands-free driving systems, but UAE motorists still can’t use it. Here’s how Super Cruise works, why it’s limited to North America, and what must happen before hands-free highway driving arrives on UAE roads.

GM Super Cruise offers hands-free driving in North America, but why isn't it in the UAE yet? Discover how LiDAR mapping and regulations affect its regional launch.

GM Super Cruise Could Change Driving in the UAE — But One Major Roadblock Still Stands in the Way

Key Highlights

  • GM’s Super Cruise enables true hands-free driving on approved highways.

  • The technology currently operates on over 750,000 miles of mapped roads in North America.

  • UAE roads are not yet included in GM’s LiDAR mapping network.

  • Local regulations support autonomous mobility, but infrastructure remains the key challenge.

  • Future UAE rollout depends on mapping, connected services, and vehicle availability.

What Is GM Super Cruise and Why Is Everyone Talking About It?

As the UAE accelerates its ambitions for smarter and more autonomous transportation, one question continues to surface among car enthusiasts and technology followers: Will GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving system come to the UAE?

Already available on select Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC models in North America, Super Cruise is one of the world's most advanced driver-assistance technologies. It allows drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel on approved highways while the vehicle manages steering, braking, and acceleration.

However, despite the UAE’s growing investment in autonomous mobility, the technology is not available locally—at least not yet.

How Super Cruise Works

Unlike conventional adaptive cruise control systems, Super Cruise combines multiple technologies to deliver hands-free highway driving.

The system uses:

  • High-precision GPS positioning

  • LiDAR-mapped road data

  • Cameras and radar sensors

  • Driver-monitoring technology

Once the vehicle detects that it is on an approved mapped highway, Super Cruise activates and takes control of steering, speed, and lane positioning. A driver-facing camera continuously monitors attention levels, ensuring the driver remains alert and ready to intervene when required.

GM classifies Super Cruise as a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), meaning the driver remains responsible for the vehicle at all times.

Why Isn’t Super Cruise Available in the UAE?

The biggest obstacle is not regulation—it's mapping.

Super Cruise relies on highly detailed LiDAR maps that have currently been created only for selected highways in the United States and Canada. Major UAE routes such as Sheikh Zayed Road (E11), Emirates Road (E611), and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311) have not yet been added to GM’s mapping network.

Additionally, several factors still need to align:

  • Expansion of GM’s connected OnStar services in the region.

  • Availability of Super Cruise-equipped models in GCC markets.

  • Calibration of the system for local road markings and driving conditions.

The UAE Is Already Preparing for Autonomous Mobility

The UAE remains one of the world's most forward-thinking markets for autonomous transportation. Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced dedicated legislation for self-driving vehicles and continues to pursue its goal of making 25% of all trips autonomous by 2030.

While these regulations primarily focus on fully autonomous vehicles, they create a favorable environment for advanced driver-assistance systems like Super Cruise in the future.

Will UAE Drivers Get Super Cruise Soon?

While a short-term launch appears unlikely, the long-term outlook is promising. If GM expands its LiDAR mapping program beyond North America and strengthens its regional connected-services infrastructure, the UAE could become one of the first Middle Eastern markets to receive the technology.

Final Verdict

GM Super Cruise represents a major leap toward safer and more convenient highway travel. Although UAE drivers cannot currently access the system, the country's strong push toward autonomous mobility means the groundwork is already being laid. For now, hands-free driving remains a North American feature—but it may only be a matter of time before UAE highways join the map.
