Ferrari, famous for its supercars, is now developing an SUV. The company values the unique sound of its V-8 and V-12 engines, which electric vehicles can't match. To keep its internal combustion engines alive while meeting stricter emissions rules, Ferrari is exploring carbon-neutral options like hydrogen and synthetic e-fuels.
In an interview, Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna mentioned that Ferrari believes internal combustion engines have a future with the help of carbon-neutral fuels. Ferrari is partnering with others to switch to e-fuels for Formula 1 by 2026 when F1 will use 100% sustainable fuel. Aramco, an F1 sponsor, is also helping develop e-fuels for both road cars and motorsports.

Vigna stated that Ferrari is trying to use hydrogen technology best, though widespread availability is anticipated by 2030. The hydrogen testing will first be conducted in motorsports, starting next year with the Extreme H series, featuring cars with batteries and hydrogen fuel cells.
Additionally, the 24 Hours of Le Mans might introduce a hydrogen-powered class by 2026. Porsche, Ferrari, Alpine, and Toyota are already developing concepts, with Ferrari having begun work on hydrogen engines.

Ferrari's CEO hinted that sustainable fuels might keep combustion engines on the market beyond 2035, aligning with the European Commission's proposal for e-fuel-powered cars. He mentioned that e-fuel development has a promising future and could boost Ferrari's carbon-reduction efforts.
Ferrari is actively exploring carbon-neutral alternatives like hydrogen and synthetic e-fuels to preserve its iconic internal combustion engines. By partnering with key stakeholders and preparing for future regulations, Ferrari aims to balance sustainability with performance, ensuring that their legacy of powerful, evocative engines continues even in an eco-friendly future.
