Dubai has officially launched fully driverless Uber rides in partnership with WeRide, Uber, the RTA, and Tawasul, marking a major milestone in the UAE’s smart mobility vision. Starting from 31 March 2026, residents can now book autonomous taxis directly through the Uber app in selected Dubai zones.
The launch supports Dubai’s ambitious goal of making 25% of all city trips autonomous by 2030.
Dubai’s autonomous vehicle journey began in July 2023 when WeRide became the first company to receive a UAE licence for self-driving vehicle testing.
After successful public pilot rides in December 2025, the RTA approved fully driverless commercial operations in February 2026. By March 2026, robotaxis officially started operating with fare-paying passengers.
The service currently runs with an initial fleet of 100 autonomous vehicles, with future expansion planned across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Riyadh.
Passengers can book a robotaxi just like a regular Uber ride by selecting the “Autonomous” option in the app.
The vehicles operate without a human driver and use WeRide’s advanced AI system, real-time sensors, digital mapping, and autonomous driving software to navigate roads safely. Tawasul remotely monitors the vehicles to provide operational support whenever required.
The experience is designed to feel smooth, futuristic, and highly convenient for daily urban commuting.
The rise of robotaxis may reduce the need for owning multiple cars, especially for urban commuters in Dubai.
Instead of paying for:
Residents can simply pay per ride using autonomous taxi services.
However, private cars will still remain important for families, long-distance travel, and areas outside current robotaxi zones.
The expansion of autonomous mobility could also influence used car demand in the UAE.
Smaller commuter cars may lose popularity in highly connected urban zones, while vehicles with advanced technology features such as adaptive cruise control, lane assist, and smart connectivity could become more desirable.
This shift may encourage buyers to choose future-ready vehicles that align with Dubai’s evolving transport ecosystem.
Dubai’s launch of fully driverless Uber rides marks a significant step toward the future of transportation in the UAE. WeRide’s robotaxis are not just introducing new technology — they are changing how residents think about mobility, commuting, and car ownership.
While autonomous taxis may not fully replace private vehicles yet, they are expected to become an important part of daily life as Dubai moves closer to its 2030 smart mobility goals.
