The Spanish car maker Cupra has launched the new Terramar to blend family practicality with high performance. This compact SUV offers the space and features of a Volkswagen Tiguan but has a unique design that makes it stand out.
The Cupra Terramar, built on Volkswagen’s MQB Evo platform, will come with five engine choices, including plug-in hybrid, gasoline, and mild-hybrid options. All versions will have a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, with power ranging from 148 horsepower in the base model to 268 horsepower in the plug-in hybrid.
The engine options start with a 1.5 eTSI mild-hybrid producing 148 hp, which uses a 48-volt starter-generator for better efficiency. This setup allows for engine-off coasting, extra support during acceleration, and energy recovery while braking. The Terramar also offers a plug-in hybrid option with a 19.7 kWh battery, providing up to 70 miles of electric range. It comes in two power levels: 201 hp or 268 hp, and supports 50 kW DC and 11 kW AC charging.
Although plug-in hybrids are often seen as sluggish, Cupra promises the Terramar will be agile and fun to drive. It has a revised front suspension and a 10 mm lower ride height for better handling. The VZ trims also let you turn off electronic stability control and switch to a Cupra driving mode.
The cabin features a lower driving position and a driver-focused design with high-quality materials. It includes a 12.9-inch infotainment screen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and illuminated touch controls. Standard tech features Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a wireless charging pad with cooling.
The Cupra Terramar will be made in Hungary at Audi’s Györ plant, where the next-gen Q3 is also produced. European deliveries are expected to start in October, with vehicles arriving by early 2025.
