Dedicated platform for i1 and i2 EVs.
BMW's commitment to pushing forward in electric vehicle technology.
Supports 800V architecture, enhancing fast charging capabilities.
Sixth-gen cylindrical cells offer faster charging and increased range.
Contrasts with the updated 2 Series and 1 Series based on the FAAR platform.
BMW plans to launch two new electric vehicles, the i1 and i2, continuing from the discontinued i3's success. The i2 is positioned as the successor to the i3, while the i1 will debut as a sedan or hatchback in 2027. The i2 is expected to follow in 2028.
The i1 and i2 will incorporate BMW's advanced electric technology from the Neue Klasse concept. They are anticipated to feature both four-wheel and front-wheel drive options. While specific pricing details are limited, these models are projected to be more affordable compared to BMW's current electric offerings.

BMW's Neue Klasse platform, featured in concepts like the saloon and X, incorporates an 800V electric architecture supporting quad, dual, and single-motor setups. BMW has outlined two versions: NAx for four-wheel and rear-wheel drive, and NBx for four-wheel and front-wheel drive configurations. Alongside its electric capabilities, the Neue Klasse platform integrates advanced connectivity and software intended for future BMW models.
The BMW i1 and i2, designed as entry-level EVs, may feature batteries with lower energy density, potentially requiring more frequent charging. However, leveraging an 800-volt platform allows for rapid charging capabilities, improving practicality and user convenience. These models will utilize BMW's sixth-generation cylindrical cells, offering up to 30% faster charging times, more than 20% higher energy density, and a 30% increase in range compared to current fifth-generation prismatic cells.

The i1 and i2, BMW's new compact EVs, diverge from the updated 2 Series and 1 Series, which use the FAAR platform. Instead, they are built on BMW's dedicated Neue Klasse electric car architecture. This platform reflects BMW's strong commitment to advancing electric mobility.
BMW's introduction of the i1 and i2 marks a significant step forward in its electric vehicle strategy. By leveraging the dedicated Neue Klasse electric car architecture, BMW aims to enhance performance and efficiency, signaling a robust commitment to advancing in the realm of electric mobility.
