Volvo Cars has halted car production at its Ridgeville, South Carolina, facility due to the parts shortage. It's the short-term pause in the production of Volvo cars at its South Carolina facility, but it is expected to restart operations soon after solving the parts scarcity issues. The facility is mainly responsible for manufacturing models like the EX90 electric.
On Thursday, Volvo announced that it would pause its production at the South Carolin facility and resume operations by Saturday. It clarified that the shutdown is caused because of the limited availability of certain components. While the EX90 is built in the US, its production depends on the global supply chain. The facility imports up to 25% of its parts from the US or Canada, 30% from Mexico, and 30% from China, while the transmission system is currently being manufactured in Sweden.
This is one of the impacts of revised tariff rates set by US President Donald Trump, charging a 30% tariff on Chinese imports and a 25% tariff on foreign auto parts imports. The increased tariff rates led to a complicated and unbalanced supply chain ecosystem and raised production costs.
In response to tackle this unprecedented challenge, Volvo has confirmed to lay out 125 employees working at the Ridgeville plant, about 5% of its active workforce there. At the global level, the automaker aims to cut 3,000 jobs, mainly in Sweden, and name it a part of a broader cost-reduction strategy to save about $2 billion.
After China, the US is the second biggest car market, with a market share of 16%. A new report coming into the news will further impact the market as it states to ban Chinese company-owned automobile manufacturers by 2027, likely to affect Volvo's future in the US.
In the UAE, Volvo cars are preferred because of their unmatched safety statistics, cutting-edge technology, and exceptional luxury experience. Volvo offers about six models in the UAE, including the Volvo S90 sedan, Volvo XC90, XC60, XC40, C40 Electric, and EX30.
