Volkswagen's Wolfsburg factory celebrates a significant milestone, marking 50 years of producing the iconic Golf car. To commemorate this achievement, the brand hosted a special event named "50 Years of Golf Production."
At the event, workers unveiled a special Golf car adorned with pictures of themselves. This car will join the factory's collection and has been released to honor the teamwork and dedication that has gone into manufacturing the Golf over the years.
Volkswagen began series production of the Golf on March 29th, exactly fifty years ago in Wolfsburg. At that time, no one anticipated that this compact car, which succeeded the iconic Beetle, would become Volkswagen's most successful model. Since its debut in 1974, over 37 million units have been produced, averaging more than 2,000 new Golf purchases globally every day over the past five decades.
In July 1974, Volkswagen shifted from the iconic Beetle to the Golf, marking a significant leap to front-mounted transverse engines. Designed by Giorgio Giugiaro, the first Golf quickly exceeded expectations. By October 1976, production had reached one million units.
Celebrated for its safety and reliability, the Golf's enduring success is evident with over 20 million units produced in Wolfsburg alone and over 37 million units produced globally.
Locally, the Volkswagen Golf is available in the Golf R and Golf GTI variants.
