The head of R&D also mentioned "major advancements" in the ID lineup starting in 2026, featuring reduced battery costs, improved functionality, and a fresh design approach, signaling an evolution in their electric vehicles.

The design of the new SUVs and ID models will draw inspiration from the ID.2all concept, featuring a retro and friendlier look reminiscent of classic Volkswagen models like the Golf. This new direction reflects the brand’s core identity, as envisioned by Andreas Mindt, the design chief.

Volkswagen is developing a sporty ID.2 GTI that will maintain the iconic GTI "DNA" while adding significant performance upgrades. The first electric GTI is expected to launch in 2026.

Grunitz also discussed the challenge of investing in both MEB (for electric vehicles) and MQB (for combustion models) architectures. He noted that despite lower-than-expected EV sales, MQB doesn't have a defined end date and could incorporate electric powertrains in the future.

Martin Sander, head of marketing and sales, emphasized that while dedicated architectures for each technology provide advantages to customers, Volkswagen intends to share components across platforms in the next generation while maintaining unique features.

Verdict

Volkswagen is embracing a new era of innovation with the upcoming ID.2all concept and its SUV counterpart, set to launch by 2025. The company is focused on enhancing its electric vehicle lineup with a design shift that reflects its classic roots, as well as improving battery technology and performance.

While continuing to invest in both electric and combustion models, Volkswagen plans to balance sustainability with customer needs, ensuring a diverse and forward-thinking portfolio. The introduction of the ID.2 GTI in 2026 will further solidify their commitment to electric performance, and the brand’s strategy of sharing components across platforms will help streamline production while preserving unique characteristics.
