Volkswagen plans to launch the ID1, an entry-level electric vehicle focused on city driving and cost efficiency.
The ID1 will not include long-range batteries or 200kW fast-charging capabilities.
It will lack the advanced connectivity functions and autonomy found in higher-end Volkswagen models.
Competing with the Citroen eC3, the ID1 draws inspiration from the discontinued Volkswagen Up.
Produced in Spain, it joins other budget-friendly EVs from Cupra, Volkswagen, and Skoda.
After an unsuccessful collaboration attempt with Renault on a €20,000 entry-level electric vehicle, Volkswagen announced that it would develop the highly anticipated model independently. Meanwhile, Renault continues to plan for a Twingo e-Tech successor at a similar price point to Volkswagen’s entry-level EV. Volkswagen aims to reveal its budget-friendly EV lineup in 2027.
Following the unveiling of the ID2 all-concept last year, Volkswagen has announced plans for a new entry-level EV. Reports indicate that the upcoming model, named the ID1, draws inspiration from the discontinued Volkswagen Up. Although the Volkswagen Up was initially planned for launch in the Indian market, the plan was canceled. There is a possibility that the new model will be released under the Up's name.
The ID1 will focus on cost efficiency rather than advanced features, setting it apart from the high-tech offerings of more expensive Volkswagen models. It is designed to compete with the Citroen eC3 and aims to establish its reputation within a similar market segment.
Volkswagen's entry-level EV will join three other budget-friendly electric cars produced in Spain: two smaller electric models from Cupra and Volkswagen, and the Skoda Epiq SUV. The brand has emphasized the challenges automakers face in building smaller electric vehicles, such as resource limitations and rising costs. Toyota also highlighted this issue earlier this year, noting the high cost of batteries as a barrier to making affordable electric hatchbacks feasible.
The final version of the ID1 will not include a long-range battery or 200kW fast-charging capability, as it is intended to be a pure city car. Additionally, it will not feature the same level of connectivity functions and advanced autonomy found in Volkswagen's more expensive models.
