In a market increasingly filled with electric vehicles, hybrids, and compact crossovers, one thing remains unchanged in the UAE: the popularity of full-size SUVs and pickup trucks.
New data released by General Motors Middle East reveals that large SUVs and pickups accounted for 44% of the company’s regional sales between 2000 and 2025, highlighting the Gulf region’s enduring preference for vehicles that combine size, practicality, and capability.
Over the last 25 years, GM sold nearly one million full-size SUVs and pickups across the Middle East, including iconic models such as the Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Yukon, GMC Sierra, and Cadillac Escalade.
The appeal of large SUVs in the UAE goes beyond their commanding road presence. Families appreciate the spacious cabins, while business owners value their versatility and towing capabilities. Off-road enthusiasts also benefit from the rugged performance these vehicles offer in desert environments.
However, buyer priorities are evolving. According to a 2024 YouGov survey commissioned by GM Africa & Middle East, 89% of respondents in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt identified safety as the most important factor when purchasing a vehicle, ranking it ahead of both affordability and vehicle design.
Today's full-size SUVs are no longer defined solely by powerful engines and large dimensions. Manufacturers are investing heavily in advanced driver-assistance systems, connected technologies, and improved structural engineering.
According to GM, modern vehicle development focuses on preventing accidents before they happen through technologies such as collision avoidance systems, adaptive safety features, intelligent sensors, and stronger yet lighter vehicle structures.
These innovations are helping manufacturers improve fuel efficiency and handling while maintaining the durability and capability that SUV buyers expect.
Industry experts believe that consumer expectations have shifted significantly over the past decade. Buyers now want vehicles that deliver premium comfort, advanced connectivity, and high levels of safety alongside traditional SUV strengths.
Features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, 360-degree cameras, large infotainment displays, and over-the-air software updates are becoming increasingly common in the segment.
This transformation is particularly important in the UAE, where long-distance driving, family travel, and luxury-oriented lifestyles continue to fuel demand for larger vehicles.
Despite growing interest in EVs and smaller urban-focused vehicles, the UAE's appetite for full-size SUVs and pickups remains stronger than ever. As technology continues to advance, future models are expected to offer even greater efficiency, smarter safety systems, and enhanced comfort without compromising the capability that has made them regional favorites.
For now, the message from the market is clear: in the UAE, bigger SUVs still have a very big future.
