Toyota and Lexus Issue Recall For Over One Million Vehicles in the United States

Toyota and Lexus are recalling approximately 1 million vehicles in the United States due to a potential issue where the front passenger airbags may not provide essential protection in the event of a crash, posing a significant risk of severe injury to occupants.

Key Highlights

  • Cars manufactured between 2020 and 2022 are subject to recall due to a flaw in the Occupant Classification System sensors.

  • The recall impacts models such as Kluger, RAV4, Camry, and Corolla, as well as specific variants of Lexus RX and ES.

A recall has been initiated for vehicles manufactured between 2020 and 2022 due to a flaw in the Occupant Classification System sensors. This potential defect could lead to a short circuit, causing the airbag system to be unable to detect the weight and presence of the passenger, resulting in a failure to deploy as intended.

The Kluger, RAV4, Camry, and Corolla, along with specific Lexus RX and ES variants, are among the models affected by the recall. Primarily impacting North American market models, the recall will have consequences for over a million vehicles in the US and nearly 100,000 in Canada. Toyota Australia has verified that the locally sold Klugers will not be subject to the recall, despite being produced in the same manufacturing facility as the affected US models.

To address the issue, Lexus and Toyota dealers will conduct comprehensive inspections on the affected vehicles at no cost to the owners. If required, they will replace the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensors without any charges incurred by the vehicle owners. Toyota has stated that notifications will be sent to all owners of the recalled vehicles by mid-February 2024.
