Suzuki's move signals a progressive stance towards future mobility solutions.
Together, Suzuki Motor Corporation and SkyDrive Inc. are producing eVTOLs (electric vertical take-off and landing)—autonomous, electric flying automobiles. In a facility controlled by Suzuki, the flying automobile production will begin in Iwata City, Japan. The partnership, which began in June 2023, entails manufacturing SkyDrives (SD-05 type) through SkyWorks Inc., a SkyDrive subsidiary.
An eVTOL is a small, three-seater flying automobile with vertical takeoff and landing capabilities that functions similarly to a helicopter. It will operate as an "Air Taxi" in the future and has autonomous features like Autopilot, providing a great way to relieve traffic congestion.

SkyDrive conducted a crewed eVTOL test flight in 2019. Since then, in preparation for possible US operations, the company has been in contact with air traffic regulators such as the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The most recent SkyDrive model, which debuted at the 2023 Paris Air Show, has a patented rotor design, can carry an additional 700 pounds, can seat three passengers, and has a flight range that is 5–10 kilometers longer than earlier models.
Another competitor in the flying car market is the £425,000 PAL-V Liberty, which debuted in 2017. In addition, Klein Vision revealed their Air Car prototype in 2022; it can carry two passengers and achieve speeds of up to 190 kmph. Hyundai is also developing an air taxi idea that it hopes to launch in 2028.

SkyDrive will participate in the Advanced Air Mobility project at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. Both SkyDrive Inc. and Suzuki Motor Corporation hope to obtain airworthiness certification for their eVTOL SKYDRIVE to take part in the exhibition.
Suzuki's venture into manufacturing flying cars in collaboration with SkyDrive marks a significant milestone in the automotive industry. This innovative partnership not only showcases Suzuki's commitment to embracing emerging technologies but also highlights the potential for aerial mobility to revolutionize transportation in the future. As Suzuki takes flight with SkyDrive, the possibilities for enhanced mobility and urban transportation solutions are boundless, paving the way for a new era of innovation and progress.
