Spy photos have revealed the first images of the upcoming Subaru Forester Hybrid, but it's somewhat outshined by the new Crosstrek Hybrid. The Forester Hybrid is set to launch this December in Japan and is expected to feature a new hybrid system that greatly improves performance and fuel efficiency.
With recent tech improvements, Subaru aims to provide a more eco-friendly option without sacrificing performance.
The hybrid system features a newly developed 2.5-liter boxer engine, producing 158 hp and 154 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery located at the rear.
The system includes two electric motors: a traction motor and a motor generator, providing 118 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque. The traction motor acts as the main power source in various driving conditions and can enable EV mode for short distances.
In the new Crosstrek Hybrid, Subaru sticks with its signature all-wheel-drive system, which differs from Toyota's rear eAxle. This "strong hybrid" improves fuel efficiency by 20%, offering a range of over 621 miles (1,000 km). It also features an AC100V/1500W outlet for powering campsite gear.
In Japan, the Crosstrek Hybrid will come in two versions. The base model features e-Boxer badging, a two-tone interior, 18-inch aluminum wheels, a 4.2-inch info display, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The top EX version includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, EyeSight with Traffic Jam Assist and Active Lane Change Assist, and GPS navigation.
Reservations are open now, and early buyers will get a special Crosstrek-branded portable freezer/refrigerator as a bonus.
The 2025 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid brings together eco-friendly technology and Subaru’s reliable all-wheel-drive system. With two available versions, improved fuel efficiency, and modern features like the EyeSight system and a digital instrument cluster, it caters to both tech-savvy and environmentally-conscious drivers. Early reservations in Japan also offer an added bonus, making it an attractive option for those looking for a versatile, fuel-efficient SUV.
