Renault's limited edition, electric remake of its iconic 1980 R5 Turbo petrol engine hatchback, which was initially repackaged to compete in rally sports, has received 850 orders in the first week despite being priced at EUR 155,000 (or AED 646,550).
Renault has confirmed to sell only 1,980 units of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E electric vehicle, which can churn 555 horsepower and continue to boast the body-built rear wings of its ICE ancestor. It can accelerate 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, making it one of the favorable performance hatchback EVs for enthusiasts.
This impressive acceleration speed is possible because of its two in-wheel electric motors in the rear wheels, which is claimed to offer the first time in a production model vehicle.

In-wheel motors are dedicated electric motors configured in all or some of the wheels of the EV, which reduces the need for axles and powertrains. Proponents state that this setup frees up the cabin's space and increases power delivery and maximum battery range because of its lighter weight.
A Renault spokesperson said that Protean, a UK-based specialist in this cutting-edge technology, will supply in-wheel motors for Turbo 3E. The spokesperson also confirmed that the automaker had received 850 reservations for the Turbo 3E in the first week after orders opened on April 22; customers from Europe, Japan, the Middle East, and Australia have shown interest in this exclusive Renault hatchback EV.
To confirm the booking for this electric car, the customers have to pay EUR 50,000 (approx AED 208,560) and wait till 2027 when the deliveries are expected to start from Renault's Alpine plant in Dieppe, northern France.
