Production of the Mazda 6 has officially concluded in Japan

Key Highlights

  • Mazda has shifted its focus to SUVs and is preparing to introduce four new models, namely the CX-70, CX-60, CX-90, and CX-80.

  • The Japanese automaker revamped the Mazda 6 by increasing the power of its 2.5-liter turbocharged engine to 173 kW and improving the performance of the six-speed automatic transmission.

The Japanese market version of the Mazda 6 is set to cease production in the spring of 2024, marking the end of its successful 12-year run since its initial launch. This information is reported by the Japanese newspaper Chugoku Shimbun.

Production of the Mazda 6 has officially concluded in Japan

The production of the popular Mazda 6 concluded in North America in 2021, and its sales in China are concluding this year. However, reports suggest that the assembly of the Mazda 6 will persist in Vietnam, ensuring a continuous supply to Southeast Asian markets, including Thailand. While Mazda Australia, the current importer of the Mazda 6 from Japan, has not commented on these reports, the strategic decision to shift production to Vietnam reflects the automaker's commitment to maintaining its presence in Southeast Asia.

Anticipated global sales for the Mazda 6 in the fiscal year ending March 2023 are approximately 34,000 units, notably lower than the projected figures for the CX-5. Production of the Mazda 6 has already ceased in the US, UK, and Canadian markets. Amidst rumors of a rear-wheel-drive replacement, the future of the model appears uncertain, particularly in light of declining sedan sales in major markets such as Japan and the US.

Mazda is shifting its focus to SUVs and is set to introduce four new models, namely the CX-70, CX-60, CX-90, and CX-80. While Mazda's collaboration with Changan in China suggests potential developments in plug-in hybrid and electric sedans, the automaker has not disclosed extensive details on this. The 2023 Mazda 6 has undergone some updates, featuring a special 20th-anniversary edition. Higher trim levels offer advanced features like assistance systems and wireless Apple CarPlay.

The Japanese automaker has refreshed the Mazda 6, increasing the power of its 2.5-liter turbocharged engine to 173 kW and improving the six-speed automatic transmission. Nevertheless, the fate of the model remains uncertain following the cessation of Japanese production.

The Mazda 6 is presently offered in the UAE in eight distinct color choices. Renowned for its broad, athletic stance and seamless connectivity features, it stands out as one of the premier sedan cars.

Verdict

Mazda 6 production in Japan signifies the culmination of a significant chapter in the model's history. With its production ceasing in its home country, the Mazda 6's legacy is marked by its journey and contributions to the automotive landscape. This milestone prompts reflection on the model's evolution, impact, and the dynamic shifts in the automotive industry. As the production curtain falls in Japan, it prompts anticipation for the future direction of Mazda and the evolution of their vehicle lineup in response to changing market trends and consumer preferences.
