[2026 Mitsubishi Pajero Returns With S-AWC, Ladder Frame and Bold New Design]
Mitsubishi has officially confirmed the return of the legendary Pajero, ending a five-year absence after the previous generation was discontinued globally in 2021. The 2026 Mitsubishi Pajero will make its world premiere on September 2, 2026, bringing back the iconic SUV with a rugged ladder-frame platform, advanced Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system, and modern technology designed for serious off-road capability.
New teaser images reveal the SUV's underbody for the first time, confirming that the next-generation Pajero shares its body-on-frame architecture with the latest Mitsubishi Triton pickup. The reborn SUV is expected to compete directly with models like the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Toyota Land Cruiser 300, Nissan Patrol, Land Rover Defender, and GWM Tank 500, especially in key markets such as the UAE and the wider GCC.
The biggest change for the new Pajero is its return to a traditional body-on-frame construction, moving away from the monocoque platform used by the previous two generations. Mitsubishi says the SUV rides on a strengthened ladder-frame chassis derived from the latest Triton but features suspension specifically tuned for SUV comfort and handling.
According to the company, the setup is engineered to deliver outstanding durability on rough terrain while improving ride comfort and reducing body movement on paved roads. Mitsubishi's engineers say the goal is to preserve the Pajero's legendary off-road capability while offering the refinement expected from a modern premium SUV.
A major highlight is the inclusion of Mitsubishi's Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system, which combines four-wheel-drive hardware with electronic torque management to maximise traction and stability.
Like the latest Triton, drivers are expected to choose between multiple drive modes using a rotary selector, including rear-wheel drive, full-time four-wheel drive, locked centre differential and low-range settings. The SUV is also likely to feature seven terrain modes—Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand and Rock—which automatically adjust throttle response, braking, traction control and torque distribution according to driving conditions.
Mitsubishi has yet to reveal official figures for ground clearance, approach and departure angles, or wading depth, with these details expected during the September launch.
Although official specifications remain under wraps, industry reports indicate the new Pajero will be powered by Mitsubishi's 2.4-litre 4N16 twin-turbo diesel engine, producing approximately 204 hp (150 kW) and 470 Nm of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is expected to be standard across most variants.
Reports also suggest Mitsubishi is developing an electrified version using its upcoming P2 hybrid system, pairing a turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor while retaining genuine four-wheel-drive capability. For Middle Eastern markets, a turbo-petrol option could also join the lineup.
Mitsubishi has confirmed that the iconic Multi Meter display will return in a modern digital form. Earlier Pajero models featured three analogue gauges displaying altitude and other off-road information, while the new SUV replaces them with a digital triple-pod display showing an altimeter, roll meter and pitch meter.
The feature pays tribute to the Pajero's celebrated Dakar Rally heritage, where it achieved 12 overall victories, including seven consecutive wins, reinforcing the SUV's off-road identity.
Official pricing has not been announced, but Japanese reports suggest the new Pajero could start between 5 million and 7 million yen, placing it close to the Toyota Land Cruiser 250 Series in its home market.
The SUV is expected to be positioned as Mitsubishi's flagship off-roader, targeting buyers seeking premium comfort, modern technology and genuine all-terrain capability.
Mitsubishi has confirmed the Pajero as a global model, with Japan, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Latin America among its priority markets. The UAE and Saudi Arabia are expected to be among the first export destinations, with sales anticipated from late 2026 to early 2027.
Australia is also expected to receive the SUV before the end of 2026, while reports continue to link a future North American launch under the Montero nameplate around 2030.
Ahead of the official unveiling, Mitsubishi has already showcased a production-ready prototype to selected dealers and customers in Japan. The September 2, 2026 world premiere is expected to reveal the complete engine lineup, transmission options, off-road specifications, ground clearance, trim levels and pricing.
With its return to a rugged ladder-frame platform, advanced S-AWC technology and strong off-road heritage, the 2026 Mitsubishi Pajero is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated SUV launches of the year and a serious challenger to the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Nissan Patrol in global and GCC markets.
