Audi Sport, the performance arm of Audi, is preparing to debut the RS5 Avant in 2025, marking its venture into electrification. This model will be Audi Sport's inaugural plug-in hybrid and will follow the RS4. Notably, Audi is adopting a new naming convention, aligning even numbers with electric vehicles (EVs) and odd numbers with combustion engine cars.
The forthcoming Audi RS5 Avant will maintain its robust 2.9-liter V6 engine, supplemented by an electric motor to amplify its performance, surpassing 450 hp and 600 Nm of torque. It will utilize the Volkswagen Group's MLB platform, adapted to house a 14.4 kWh battery for plug-in hybrid variants.
Audi Sport's adoption of PHEV powertrains aligns with its goal of transitioning to electric power by 2035. This strategic move positions Audi to compete vigorously against rivals such as Mercedes-AMG, which recently introduced the C 63 with a plug-in hybrid powertrain generating 680 hp and 1020 Nm of torque. Additionally, Audi's enhancements to the MLB platform will introduce supplementary features like Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities and rear-wheel steering.

Audi Sport's initial PHEV prototypes showcase prominent characteristics such as oversized wheels, widened wheel arches, and strategically placed air outlets to optimize cooling. The forthcoming RS5 Avant estate has been observed undergoing testing in full-fledged RS form, although uncertainty persists regarding the sedan variant.
Audi Sport's move towards electrification aligns with the driving patterns of its customers, particularly regarding daily commuting distances. There are discussions about transitioning models like the RS6 and RS4 towards electrification, with hybridization being the initial focus. While the potential replacement for the current RS6's mild-hybrid V8 engine is uncertain, there's anticipation that a plug-in hybrid successor will be introduced alongside the upcoming A6/A7 models.
Verdict
Audi Sport's shift towards electrification represents a strategic move to align with evolving customer preferences and sustainability goals. By introducing plug-in hybrid variants like the upcoming RS5 Avant, Audi aims to enhance performance while reducing emissions. This transition underscores Audi's commitment to innovation and adapting to the changing automotive landscape.
