In a stunning pivot that's sending ripples through Dubai's ultra-luxury car scene, Lamborghini has officially scrapped plans for its first all-electric model, the Lanzador, citing “near zero” interest from its high-net-worth customers. CEO Stephan Winkelmann revealed in a February 2026 interview with The Sunday Times that the brand's target buyers show almost no appetite for full-EV supercars, calling heavy EV investment an “expensive hobby” with little return. Instead, the Lanzador will launch as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) in 2029, and by 2030, Lamborghini's entire lineup, including Huracán, Revuelto, Urus, and the new model, will be PHEV-only.
This decision arrives as Dubai remains a global hotspot for exotic cars, with Lamborghini's showroom in Al Quoz buzzing with V12 and V8 enthusiasts who crave the signature roar, drama, and visceral performance. The UAE's affluent collectors, many drawn to the brand's iconic sound and emotion, appear to echo Winkelmann's view: silent electric propulsion simply doesn't deliver the soul of a raging bull.

The Lanzador debuted as a sleek, high-riding electric concept in 2023, promising groundbreaking power (potentially 2,000 hp) and zero-emission thrills for a 2028–2029 debut. It was positioned as Lamborghini's bold step into electrification, aligning with parent Volkswagen Group's sustainability push. But after over a year of customer feedback, dealer insights, and market data, the brand quietly canceled the pure-EV version in late 2025.
Winkelmann explained the “acceptance curve” for full EVs among supercar buyers has flattened to “close to zero.” Wealthy clients miss the engine noise, exhaust drama, and instantaneous analog feel that define Lamborghini. Developing EVs requires massive R&D without guaranteed sales, risking financial strain on shareholders, employees, and loyal owners.
In Dubai and the broader UAE, this resonates strongly. The region boasts one of the world's highest concentrations of Lamborghinis, where cars are status symbols often enjoyed on open highways and at exclusive events. Hybrids offer a compromise: electric torque for silent launches and efficiency, plus a roaring combustion engine for that unmistakable Lamborghini soundtrack. The Urus SE PHEV (launched in the Middle East in 2025) already proves the formula works: 800 hp, 60+ km electric range, and top-tier performance without sacrificing emotion.

For Dubai enthusiasts, the news is a relief rather than a setback. Full EVs face challenges here: limited ultra-fast charging infrastructure for high-power needs, range anxiety on desert drives, and a cultural preference for engine drama. PHEVs sidestep these issues while meeting growing sustainability expectations from regulators and luxury buyers.
Lamborghini's UAE dealer network (Al Naboodah Automotive) continues to thrive with hybrids like the Revuelto and Urus SE leading sales. The shift ensures future models retain the brand's DNA, aggressive styling, blistering acceleration, and that iconic exhaust note while incorporating hybrid tech for lower emissions and instant torque.
Looking ahead, Winkelmann left the door cracked: “Never say never, but only when the time is right.” Full EVs may arrive post-2040, but for now, Lamborghini doubles down on hybrids that thrill without compromise.
Dubai's supercar lovers can breathe easy; the raging bull isn't going silent anytime soon. It’s evolving, staying loud, and ready to dominate the dunes and downtown alike.
