Mercedes-Benz cancels new EV platform due to weak market performance.
MB.EA platform for full-size and mid-size EVs abandoned.
The focus shifts to updating the existing EVA2 platform for EQE and EQS successors.
Strategy change follows the delay in the electrified car share target and revised 2030 plans.
Development continues on other platforms like MB.AMG, MMA, and MB.VAN.
Mercedes-Benz stops working on a new platform for large and medium electric vehicles due to reduced spending in the EV sector, driven by declining sales.
Mercedes-Benz's MB.EA platform, introduced in 2021, was part of the brand's pledge to go all-electric by 2030. However, in February, the company scrapped this initiative due to lower-than-expected electric vehicle sales. Mercedes-Benz will maintain gas-engine vehicle production into the coming decade.
Mercedes-Benz had originally intended to develop two versions of the MB.EA platform: MB.EA Large for larger models like the EQE and EQS, and MB.EA Small for smaller vehicles. However, they have now decided to cancel the MB.EA Large platform. Instead, they will concentrate on enhancing the existing EVA2 platform for the next-generation EQE and EQS models. The successor to the EQS is expected around 2028, featuring a traditional sedan design.
Anticipated enhancements in the EVA2 platform include upgraded electric motors and advanced battery cell tech for improved range. Mercedes-Benz also intends to develop other platforms like MB.AMG for sports cars, MMA for compact EVs, and MB.VAN for commercial vehicles.
These adjustments come as Mercedes-Benz revises its electric vehicle strategy, delaying its goal of achieving a 50% electrified car share by 2030. Moreover, plans to exclusively offer electric vehicles in certain markets by 2030 have been reevaluated.
Mercedes-Benz has decided to halt the development of its new MB.EA platform for electric vehicles due to lower-than-expected sales in the electric vehicle segment. Instead, the company will focus on updating existing platforms like the EVA2 for its upcoming electric vehicle models. This decision reflects a shift in strategy as Mercedes-Benz revises its plans for electrification and aims to adapt to changing market dynamics.
