Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology was launched globally in mid-2024 and positioned as an electric version of Mercedes’ famous G-Class SUV. Mercedes-Benz introduced this model to offer a mix of conventional off-road capabilities with modern electric features. While the model offers impressive power delivery, top-end luxury features, and boxy dimensions for which the G-Class is known, the G 580 SUV received a mixed response in global markets.

The Mercedes-Benz G 580 electric generated fewer sales than its ICE counterpart. Only 1,450 units of G 580 were sold in its first year of launch, compared to 9700 units of the ICE version of G-Class.
One of the major reasons for its low sales is the pricing structure set by Mercedes-Benz. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class entry-level price in the UAE for the ICE version starts from AED 759,900, whereas the Mercedes-Benz G 580 EQ costs AED 1,005,900.
Despite being priced higher, the G 580 EQ offers an EPA-certified range of only 473 km. Under the same budget range, many of its competitors offer longer-range options with impressive power delivery and off-roading capabilities.
Another concern the international customers have reported is the practicality issues. The electric version of the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class has a heavyweight but limited payload capacity and also does not have any towbar option.
The G-Class has been one of the most loved Mercedes SUVs in the global markets, particularly in the UAE, and it continues to receive promising sales. The automaker reported the highest-ever sales for its G-Class in the last quarter of 2024 and an 18% increase in sales in early 2025. As market sentiments change and people become more aware of electric vehicles, the German automaker plans to launch a fully capable range of electric models and advanced fuel-powered options by 2030. It would be interesting to see how the automaker adapts and makes its flagship electric offerings like the G 580 EQ competitive in the global luxury car market.
Mercedes has equipped its G 580 EQ with advanced electric technology and built on a modified ladder frame to house four high-power electric motors for each wheel. The electric powertrain setup delivers 579 horsepower and 1,164 Nm of torque. The electric luxury SUV sprints 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and delivers a range of up to 473 km. The G 580 SUV also gets G-Turn, allowing it to turn in place, suitable for off-road performance.
