ABU DHABI: Mercedes Benz and BMW have stepped aside from their competition to work together to build a network of fast chargers throughout China. By the end of 2026, they hope to have 1,000 supercharging stations constructed in China thanks to this joint venture. In addition, approximately 7,000 charging stations will be made available to EV owners.

Key Takeaways

By the end of 2026, how many supercharging stations are Mercedes-Benz and BMW planning to construct?
Mercedes-Benz and BMW have teamed up to construct 1,000 supercharging stations in China by the end of 2026.

When will the first Mercedes-Benz and BMW charging stations open in China?

In China, the first charging stations from Mercedes-Benz and BMW will open by 2024. Strategically located throughout the country, these charging stations will be installed in the best NEV regions. Establishing a robust and extensive EV charging infrastructure countrywide is the goal of this joint endeavor. Energy derived from renewable sources will power these charging stations.

The premium supercharging network will be open to all users. However, owners of vehicles with roundel or three-pointed stars can take advantage of extra benefits. Customers of Mercedes-Benz and BMW will be able to take advantage of a seamless digital charging experience, which includes online booking and plug-and-charge. Specific details regarding these benefits have not yet been disclosed.

Mercedes-Benz declared earlier this year that it would spend a significant sum of money to develop its own charging network by 2030, with 10,000 fast-charging locations spread across China, North America, and Europe.

China has 2.525 million public charging piles, including 1.435 million AC and 2.525 million public charging piles, according to the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance. The Mercedes-Benz and BMW joint venture will contribute to the expansion of China's electric vehicle infrastructure.
