Mercedes-AMG, famous for its powerful V-12 and V-8 engines, is moving toward electrification. It first launched the C63 hybrid sports sedan, combining a 2.0-liter inline-four engine with an electric motor, and introduced the Vision AMG concept, hinting at an all-electric AMG model. Now, AMG is working on its first fully electric SUV.
AMG is developing the new super electric SUV independently, unlike the EQS SUV. It’s set to launch in 2026, after the release of the second-generation AMG GT 4-door coupe.
The EV will be built on the AMG.EA platform, a modified version of Mercedes' MB.EA, featuring Yasa’s advanced 480hp motors. This high-performance setup includes dual motors delivering over 1,000hp, along with an AMG-specific silicon anode battery and 800V system for boosted performance.
Mercedes has not announced an official name for its upcoming electric SUV, referring to it as the "Born in Affalterbach" SUV. This will be AMG’s sixth in-house model, following two AMG GT versions, the SLS AMG, the SL, and an electric sedan.
Set to replace the AMG GLE 63, it will compete with models like the Porsche Cayenne Electric, Lotus Eletre, and BMW XM hybrid. Mercedes promises the SUV will emphasize "performance and emotion" with a unique AMG design approach, and winter testing for prototypes is already planned.
Mercedes-AMG is taking a bold step into the electric future with its upcoming high-performance SUV, aiming to blend AMG's signature power and emotion with cutting-edge EV technology.
This "Born in Affalterbach" model is set to stand out in the luxury EV market, competing with elite models like the Porsche Cayenne Electric and BMW XM. With an AMG-specific platform and innovative battery tech, Mercedes-AMG is positioning this new electric SUV as a strong contender in the high-performance electric vehicle segment.
