CEO Feng Qingfeng confirmed the brand’s commitment to top-tier powertrains, including electric and hybrid technologies.
Lotus plans to upgrade models like the Emeya sedan, Eletre SUV, and a future rival to the Porsche Macan with hybrid drivetrains.
The brand is responding to the slow adoption of electric vehicles in the luxury segment, where buyers still favor internal combustion engines.
While electric vehicles remain part of Lotus’s long-term vision, hybrids will be the main focus for the brand in the near future.
Lotus is now emphasizing high-performance "Super Hybrids" alongside its electric models like the Emeya and Eletre. CEO Feng Qingfeng confirmed this at the Guangzhou Motor Show, underscoring the brand's dedication to advanced powertrains, whether gasoline, electric, or hybrid. This marks a shift from Lotus's previous opposition to plug-in hybrids.
Lotus has not yet confirmed which models will feature hybrid drivetrains, but it is considering upgrading the Emeya sedan, Eletre SUV, and a future competitor to the Porsche Macan.
CEO Feng Qingfeng highlighted Lotus's dedication to offering top-tier powertrains, including electric and hybrid options. With growing demand for range-extender hybrids and plug-in hybrids, luxury car buyers are hesitant to fully embrace EVs, preferring the performance of powerful internal combustion engines.
Initially, Lotus rejected PHEVs due to the need for regular charging to fully utilize their electric capabilities, as well as concerns about sluggishness when the battery is low. To overcome this, Lotus plans to enhance battery charging speeds with assistance from the internal combustion engine. The brand is set to unveil its latest lineup globally.
In the luxury market, slow electric vehicle adoption is driven by buyers' satisfaction with internal combustion engine performance. Lotus's shift to hybrids reflects a response to changing customer preferences, balancing innovation with tradition. Although electric vehicles are still part of their long-term vision, hybrid technology will now take center stage for the brand.
Lotus’s pivot towards hybrid technology marks a strategic response to the evolving automotive landscape, where luxury car buyers still favor the performance of internal combustion engines. While the brand continues to push toward an all-electric future, hybrids will take precedence in the short term, offering a blend of innovation and tradition. This shift ensures Lotus stays relevant and meets the demands of discerning customers, as it navigates the changing tides of the automotive industry.
