The Infiniti Q50 sedan will end production at the end of 2024, marking the end of Infiniti's sedan offerings.
Infiniti is shifting its focus to SUVs and electrification, with the QX60 and QX80 SUVs leading the lineup.
The 2024 Infiniti lineup includes updated models like the QX60 and the new QX80, which shares its platform with the upcoming Nissan Patrol.
Infiniti launched as a premium brand under Nissan in 1989, has evolved from models like the G20 and G35 to the Q50, a well-regarded luxury sports sedan.
The Q50 features a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with up to 400hp and 475Nm of torque in higher trims.
The Infiniti Q50 will be discontinued at the end of 2024, closing a chapter after more than a decade of production. Infiniti ends its sedan lineup with this decision, making the Q50 the last one. Starting in 2025, Infiniti will exclusively produce SUVs.
Infiniti recently revealed several updates to its 2024 lineup in North America. While the QX50 and QX55 receive small tweaks, the newly launched Infiniti QX60 sees significant changes, including a new engine, additional features, and some design updates.
The most significant additions to the lineup are the introduction of the all-new Infiniti QX80 flagship SUV. This powerful SUV is built on the same platform as the next-generation Nissan Patrol, which is set to be unveiled in early September 2024.
The second major change in Infiniti's new lineup is the discontinuation of the Q50, their only sedan still in production. This reflects the automotive industry's shift towards new priorities and technologies. The same lineup is expected to be introduced in the Middle East and UAE markets as well.
Infiniti was created in 1989 as a premium, luxury division of Nissan, offering cars with a more upscale feel based on Nissan models. Just as Honda introduced Acura and Toyota launched Lexus, Nissan established Infiniti. In 1990, Infiniti released the G20, which was based on the Nissan Primera.
Then, in 2002, the brand introduced the G35, derived from the 11th generation Nissan Skyline sedan, which succeeded the iconic Nissan GT-R R34.
In 2007, Infiniti introduced the Q60, followed by the Q50 in 2013, which was based on the 12th and 13th generations of the Nissan Skyline. The Q50, with its stylish design, advanced tech, and powerful engine options, was well-received by both enthusiasts and critics. Although the Q50 saw updates in its design, technology, and performance over the years, it remained true to its identity as a luxury sports sedan.
The Infiniti Q50 has a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that generates 300 hp and 400 Nm of torque. In the high-performance Sport and Red Sport models, the engine is tuned to deliver 400 hp and 475 Nm.
Notable features include:
Despite its past success, the Q50 struggled to keep up with the fast-changing automotive market, which has shifted heavily toward SUVs and electric vehicles (EVs), resulting in declining sales for traditional sports sedans like the Q50.
Given these challenges, Infiniti’s decision to discontinue the Q50 makes sense as part of a larger strategy to focus on SUVs and electrification. With the QX60 and QX80 SUVs at the forefront, Infiniti is now concentrating on meeting the increasing demand for these types of vehicles.
Infiniti is focusing on the future with a stronger commitment to sustainability. Although there’s no direct replacement for the Q50 planned, Infiniti is working on a new sports sedan. In 2023, the brand unveiled the Vision Qe, an electric sedan concept.
This concept is rumored to hint at Infiniti's future flagship electric sedan. It's also speculated that this sedan might share its foundation with the upcoming Nissan Maxima EV.
Infiniti is ending the production of its Q50 sedan by the end of 2024, marking a significant shift in its lineup. As the automotive market moves towards SUVs and electric vehicles, Infiniti is focusing on expanding its SUV offerings and exploring electrification.
The brand's future will center around new models like the QX60 and QX80 SUVs, and a potential electric sedan based on the upcoming Nissan Maxima EV. This strategy aligns Infiniti with evolving market trends and technological advancements.
