General Motors has announced a collaboration with Nvidia to integrate AI chips and software into its autonomous vehicle technology and factory systems. This strategic partnership aims to strengthen GM’s manufacturing capabilities and support the development of new-generation driver-assist systems.
The collaboration will use Nvidia’s AI platforms to train manufacturing models, streamlining GM’s factory planning and operations. GM will also incorporate Nvidia’s autonomous technology into its latest driver-assist systems to improve vehicle safety and performance. Though the financial details were not disclosed, the GM representative stated that this strategic collaboration includes AI integration for manufacturing and the purchase of Nvidia chips for GM’s driver assistance solutions.
Like other automobile manufacturers, including Toyota and Hyundai, General Motors partnered with Nvidia to develop autonomous driving capabilities. This strategic effort aims to compete with Tesla, which uses its proprietary technology for the Full Self-Driving system.
Additionally, GM will utilize Nvidia’s Omniverse platform to set up digital twins of assembly lines, enabling virtual testing and production simulations to lower downtime. The process will also include a training robotics platform already used for various operations, including material handling and transport, to achieve optimal manufacturing safety and efficiency.
GM has previously used Nvidia’s chip in its Cruise robotaxis. GM began developing custom chips in its in-house facility to reduce costs and lower dependency before shifting its focus from robotaxis to advancing autonomous vehicle technology.
General Motors has forecasted that its Super Cruiser driver assistance technology would generate $2 billion in annual revenue in five years. The Super Cruise comes with free access for three years, after which customers can subscribe to the service for $25 per month or $250 per year.
In recent years, Nvidia’s cutting-edge technologies have gained attention in the global automobile industry. From China’s leading EV maker BYD to German automaker Mercedes-Benz and US-based Rivian have leveraged Nvidia’s platform for developing advanced driver assistance systems. General Motors previously used Nvidia’s platform for AI model training, simulation, and validation.
