This acquisition significantly advanced the development of BMW's first SUV, eventually resulting in the BMW X5. The company branded it as a 'Sports Activity Vehicle' (SAV) to highlight its on-road performance and dynamic abilities.
The first-generation BMW X5, internally known as the E53, debuted in 1999, marking BMW's entry into the SUV market and setting new standards for luxury and performance in this segment. Drawing inspiration from the Range Rover, it incorporated technology and components from the British SUV.
From the start, BMW was clear about positioning the X5 as a dynamic and sporty on-road SUV. Therefore, the E53 X5 was built on a unibody chassis, unlike the body-on-frame construction typical of traditional SUVs.
The SUV was equipped with BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system, featuring a rear bias to ensure it handled like a BMW. Petrol engine options included a 3.0-liter inline-6 and a 4.4-liter V8, while diesel models were powered by a 3.0-liter inline-6 unit.
In 2006, BMW introduced the second-generation X5, known as the E70. Building on its predecessor's success, the E70 showcased a completely new design, advanced technology, impressive performance, and enhanced safety features. The new model was larger, providing more interior space and optional third-row seats, making it more suitable for families.
The same engine options were available, along with a new 4.8-litre V8. However, the older engines were updated for better efficiency. The all-wheel-drive system received further refinements, and the vehicle's handling improved with features like Adaptive Drive and Active Steering. The E70 also introduced BMW's EfficientDynamics technology to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
BMW X5 M
Unveiled at the 2009 New York Auto Show, the BMW X5 M is the high-performance variant of the X5. At its debut, it was the most powerful SUV in its class, featuring a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine that delivered 547 hp and 680 Nm of torque.
The third-generation BMW X5, known as the F15, was launched in 2013. This model marked a big step forward in design, technology, and performance. It had a more aggressive and modern look with sharper lines and a larger kidney grille. Many consider it the best-looking X5 generation to date.

The G05 BMW X5 offers a variety of engines, such as turbocharged inline-4 and inline-6 petrol and diesel options. Its plug-in hybrid version utilizes a 3.0-liter inline-6 engine. BMW has also enhanced its xDrive system and introduced a new air suspension system in this SUV.
The BMW X5 M (F95) is renowned for its aggressive performance, especially the X5 M Competition with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine producing 597hp and 616hp respectively, accelerating from 0-100km/h in just 3.8 seconds.
