Introduction of the F70 model, signaling a significant advancement.
Larger dimensions and simplified naming convention.
Enhanced exterior features and modern cabin design.
Advanced technology including a large infotainment touchscreen and digital instrument display.
-Performance improvements, particularly in the M135 variant.
The 2025 BMW 1 Series, codenamed F70, has been unveiled, bypassing the usual model update and advancing directly to the next generation. Although it might seem like a minor update, the new internal codename signifies that BMW considers it a major leap forward and an impressive next-generation vehicle.
In comparison to its predecessor, the new 1 Series is bigger, featuring a 25mm taller height and a 42mm longer body. Despite these increased dimensions, it maintains the same wheelbase (2670mm) and width (1800mm). With the rear seats up, the cargo capacity is approximately 380 litres, expanding to 1200 litres when folded. However, the 120d or 120 models have a reduced cargo capacity of 300 litres when upright and around 1135 litres when folded due to the presence of the 48-volt battery.
In a departure from tradition, the 1 Series has eliminated the 'i' designation from its petrol model names, reserving it for electric cars. Now, models are simply named with numbers, such as M135 and 118.
The updated 1 Series showcases wider and slimmer 'kidney' grilles, which are now connected by adaptive cruise control radar. The exterior design is further enhanced with newly sculpted LED taillights and adaptive LED headlights. The M135 model stands out with its distinctive grille insert, quad exhaust tips, and black M mirror caps. Additionally, new 17- and 18-inch wheel designs have replaced the previous 19-inch option, and an optional black contrast roof is available.
The 1 Series interior is equipped with a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument display. It runs on iDrive 9 software, offering Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay. Air-conditioning controls are integrated into the screen, which also provides customizable shortcuts, downloadable updates, and streaming apps through ConnectedDrive Store. Optional features include augmented-reality HUD, Harman Kardon sound system, phone-as-a-key functionality, dual-zone climate control, panoramic roof, and ambient lighting.
Cabin upholstery has transitioned to synthetic 'Veganza' material from leather, while M Sport models feature Alcantara accents. Flagship models offer power-adjustable massaging and heated front seats, driver’s side seat memory, and a heated steering wheel. The power-operated tailgate now includes a hands-free function.
European models of the new 1 Series come with diesel and petrol engines, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Enhanced handling is a highlight of the new 1 Series, attributed to reworked suspension featuring revised tuning and lighter components. Some models even incorporate an under-bonnet strut brace. Performance is further enhanced with upgraded shock absorbers and a more precise braking system.
The M Sport pack, available on select models, offers quicker steering and adaptive dampers, which come standard on the M135. Additionally, single-piston rear M Sport performance brakes are standard, with optional four-piston front brakes available, featuring larger discs.
Certain models offer a 'Sport Boost' mode activated by holding the left shift paddle. The M135 variant boasts additional features including simulated engine noise, a sports exhaust, launch control, distinctive struts, a mechanical front differential lock, performance brakes, and stiffer anti-roll bars. An upcoming M Technology Package for the M135 will include 'weight-optimized' anti-roll bars, retuned front dampers, and additional under-floor bracing.
2025 BMW 1 Series introduces significant updates across design, technology, and performance. With the F70 model, BMW embraces larger dimensions and simplifies its naming convention. Enhanced exterior features and a modern cabin equipped with advanced technology contribute to its appeal. Performance improvements, especially in the sport-oriented M135 variant, ensure a compelling driving experience. Overall, the new BMW 1 Series promises to deliver luxury, innovation, and dynamic driving in the compact car segment.
