That is exactly what you read. This isn't satire. In reverse, the fastest car now is the Rimac Nevera. The highest speed the Croatian hypercar could reach in reverse was 275.74 km/h. Moving forward or even backward, cars are not capable of this.
The Nevera has no gears because it is an electric vehicle or, more accurately, an electric time machine, judging by the speed it could reach in reverse. With the help of its four independent motors, the vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 160 km/h in 3.21 seconds and from 0 to 320 km/h in less than 11 seconds.
This historic occasion was held at the Automotive Testing Papenburg facility in Germany, where the Nevera had previously broken over 20 records in a single day for acceleration and braking, as well as setting a record-breaking top speed run of 412 km/h. Using Dewesoft, Guinness World Records observed and assessed the data from the record-breaking run of the Nevera. Just wow.

Matija Renić "It occurred to us during development that Nevera would probably be the world's fastest car in reverse, but we kind of laughed it off," said Bugatti Rimac, Chief Program Engineer of Nevera. After all, the stability, cooling, and aerodynamics hadn't been designed for rapid reverse travel. But then we got to talking about how much fun it would be to try it. We were entering uncharted territory when our simulations indicated that we could reach well over 241 km/h, but we had no idea how stable it would be.
The Nevera will be available for purchase from Rimac's brand-new showroom when it opens in the first quarter of 2024.
