Dubai: The Toyota Camry has long been known as a practical, reliable family sedan, but Toyota Gazoo Racing has completely rewritten that narrative with one of the most outrageous concepts the brand has ever built. Revealed at the Fuji 24 Hours endurance race in Japan, the new Toyota Camry Concept packs two engines, seven cylinders, all-wheel drive, and approximately 700 horsepower.
While this extreme machine isn't headed for production, it serves a much bigger purpose. Beneath the dramatic bodywork lies Toyota's all-new G20E 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which is expected to power future Gazoo Racing performance models.
At first glance, it may look like a heavily modified Camry, but underneath, this concept is a full-blown engineering experiment.
Toyota replaced the standard hybrid setup with two separate petrol engines, creating one of the most unusual performance sedans ever built by the company.
At the front sits the familiar 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine found in the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. Producing approximately 300hp, it drives the front wheels.
The real surprise is hidden behind the front seats. Toyota engineers installed an all-new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the rear section of the car, where the rear passenger area and luggage compartment would normally be located. This engine contributes roughly 400hp and powers the rear wheels independently.
Combined, the setup delivers a staggering 700hp, giving the Camry concept a unique seven-cylinder configuration.
Unlike traditional all-wheel-drive systems that rely on a single engine, this Camry uses an entirely different approach.
The front engine controls the front axle, while the rear-mounted engine powers the rear axle. The result is effectively two drivetrains working together in one vehicle.
The setup is highly complex and unlikely to be practical for a production vehicle, but it demonstrates the engineering freedom Toyota Gazoo Racing enjoys when developing experimental projects.
Toyota didn't stop at the powertrain.
The concept receives extensive visual upgrades to match its performance credentials, including:
The rear interior has been completely stripped out to accommodate the second engine and associated components, transforming the family sedan into a purpose-built performance machine.
While the twin-engine layout grabs headlines, Toyota's primary goal was to introduce its upcoming G20E turbocharged petrol engine.
This newly developed 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit is engineered specifically for performance applications and produces around 400hp in concept form.
Although Toyota has not confirmed final production specifications, the company is expected to use this engine across future GR models, potentially including sports cars, performance hatchbacks, and electrified performance vehicles.
The engine signals Toyota's continued commitment to high-performance combustion technology even as the industry accelerates toward electrification.
Toyota also showcased a second Camry concept during the event.
Inspired by Japan's iconic Bōsōzoku car culture, this version featured dramatic styling elements including exaggerated exhaust pipes, retro-themed bodywork, and a heavily customised interior.
Unlike the twin-engine monster, this concept used the new G20E engine in a more conventional layout, further highlighting the versatility of Toyota's upcoming performance powertrain.
The Fuji 24 Hours race has become a testing ground for Toyota's future technologies.
In recent years, the manufacturer has used the event to showcase hydrogen combustion projects, alternative fuel technologies, and experimental performance vehicles.
This latest Camry concept continues that tradition while giving enthusiasts an exciting glimpse at the next generation of Gazoo Racing engineering.
Rather than previewing a future production Camry, the project serves as a rolling laboratory for new technologies that could eventually find their way into future GR performance models.
The standard Toyota Camry remains one of the UAE's most popular sedans thanks to its reputation for comfort, reliability, fuel efficiency, and strong resale value.
While this 700hp concept won't be arriving in local showrooms, the technology behind it could be highly relevant for future performance vehicles destined for global markets, including the Middle East.
The biggest takeaway is the arrival of Toyota's new G20E turbocharged engine, which could power the next generation of GR performance cars that may eventually reach UAE buyers.
The twin-engine Toyota Camry concept is one of the boldest projects Toyota Gazoo Racing has ever revealed. With approximately 700 horsepower, a unique dual-engine drivetrain, and a striking motorsport-inspired design, it transforms one of the world's most sensible sedans into an engineering showcase.
More importantly, it introduces Toyota's new G20E 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, which appears set to play a major role in the future of the brand's performance lineup.
The Camry itself may never enter production in this form, but the technology it previews could shape the next generation of Toyota GR vehicles for years to come.
