When Nissan Motor Corporation was first established in the 1930s, it produced castings and metalwork. After creating its first automobile in 1935, the company constructed trucks and aircraft for the Imperial Japanese Army. Based on a handful of Austin patents, Nissan began manufacturing sedans following World War II.

But Nissan had higher aspirations than simply manufacturing passable sedans. Due to Nissan's unwavering focus on the sports vehicle market, two of the most famous sports cars in history were created. Nissan debuted the first-generation Skyline GT-R in 1969, making it a significant year.

Skyline History

It's important to comprehend the importance of the Skyline series in the history of the car before diving into the different GT-R iterations. The only name for the current generation is the Nissan GT-R. The Skyline GT-R was its prior name till the previous generation. This is a result of its Skyline past.

Japan's Prince Motor Company was founded in 1947 as an automobile manufacturer. Together with a 15-seater van, the firm also produced two sedans, Skyline and Gloria. The brand was discontinued in 1966 after merging with Nissan. But Nissan went on making the Skyline and Gloria.

The Gloria was subsequently called the Infiniti Q70 and was considered a luxury car. Eventually, the Infiniti G sedan replaced the Skyline sedan. But Nissan decided to create a more aggressive Skyline, and that's the vehicle this page is focused on: the Skyline GT-R & Nissan GT-R.

The Prince Skyline was intended to be a luxury vehicle when it was first unveiled in 1957, but it wasn't until the 1960s that it began to get noticed in the world of motorsports, especially in Japan's touring car racing scene.

First Generation Skyline GT-R (PGC10) | 1969 – 1972

Launched in 1969, the PGC10 was the first real GT-R vehicle. Nissan positioned the GT-R as a sporty sedan, drawing from its history in Skyline racing; some advertising campaigns even featured the Nissan R380 racecar.

At the time, the 2.0-liter inline-six engine produced 160 horsepower and 176 Nm, which was quite good. The PGC10's superior suspension and racing history made it stand out. The sedan was first offered in 1971 as a two-door coupe, designated KPGC10. In Japan, this generation claimed multiple titles.

Second Generation Skyline GT-R (KPGC110) | 1972 – 1973

The popularity of the first generation was expanded upon by the second, which was released in 1972. The 2.0-liter inline-6 engine provided the same power, but it was tweaked for increased responsiveness. With enhanced aerodynamics, it strengthened the GT-R's hegemony in racing.

However, the manufacture of the GT-R was discontinued, signaling the end of an era, due to harsher emissions rules and the oil crisis of the 1970s. Since there were only 197 made, it is now a rare collectible.

Third Generation Skyline GT-R (R32) | 1989 – 1994

The famous R32 model marked the GT-R's comeback in 1989, following a 16-year break. Throughout the world, enthusiasts of cars hold the R32 in high regard. It unveiled several ground-breaking technologies. The R32's development was exclusively focused on Group A racing.

The R32's unmatched performance rapidly earned it a reputation. It gained notoriety as the "Godzilla" of the automobile world because of Wheels Magazine. It won the esteem of aficionados all over the world and dominated the racing circuit. 43,937 units in total were made.

Fourth Generation Skyline GT-R (R33) | 1995 – 1998

In 1995, the R33 made its appearance. It improved the GT-R's handling and aerodynamics, which raised its performance potential even further. It had a lower ground clearance and a sportier suspension.

The R33 GT-R was more capable than its predecessor thanks to a newer ATTESA E-TS Pro all-wheel-drive system with a limited-slip differential. However, the engine stayed the same. It was, nevertheless, more performant in some way. The world's first production car to lap the Nurburgring in under eight minutes was the R33 GT-R!

Fifth Generation Skyline GT-R (R34) | 1999 – 2002

Considered by many to be the best GT-R generation ever made, the R34 was first released in 1999. It boasted unmatched performance and handling thanks to cutting-edge technologies, such as the Super-HICAS rear-wheel steering system. The R34's reputation as a cultural icon was further cemented by its inclusion in popular media, including the Fast and Furious film series.

Since this generation was just as innovative as the R33, it was nicknamed the "Return of the Godzilla." The 2.6-liter turbocharged inline-6 RB26DETT engine was utilized in the Standard, V-Spec, M-Spec, and M-Spec Nur versions. Although Nissan said that it produced about 276 horsepower, most people think that the factory output was little more than 400 horsepower.

Sixth Generation (R35) | 2007 – Present

It is propelled by a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that initially had 473 horsepower. The most recent model, which debuted in 2016, has 562 horsepower. The track version increases horsepower to 592 horsepower. Looking at aftermarket modifications, 800+ horsepower may be attained with a few easy tweaks. 1,500+ horsepower is easily attainable if one chooses to push the boundaries.

The R35 has received plaudits from both critics and enthusiasts for its innovative features and lightning-fast speed. Its notoriously harsh launch control system pins its occupants to the seats while it accelerates.
