[Dubai Clears Major Milestone for Air Taxi Launch With First Vertiport]
Dubai has moved a step closer to launching commercial flying taxis after its first dedicated air taxi vertiport received official regulatory approval. Located near Dubai International Airport (DXB), the facility will serve as the main hub for the city's future electric air taxi network, with commercial operations targeted before the end of 2026.
Covering approximately 3,100 square metres, the new vertiport has been purpose-built for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
The facility includes two dedicated take-off and landing pads, allowing aircraft to operate efficiently while supporting future passenger demand. Once the network reaches full operation, the DXB hub is expected to handle up to 170,000 passengers annually, making it one of the most significant pieces of Dubai's next-generation transport infrastructure.
Unlike conventional airports, the passenger experience has been designed to be quick and seamless. After arriving at the terminal, travellers will complete check-in before boarding their aircraft, with the entire boarding process expected to take around five minutes.
The approved DXB facility represents only the first phase of Dubai's wider air mobility vision.
Construction is already progressing on another vertiport at Dubai Marina, while additional sites are planned for Dubai Mall and Palm Jumeirah. Together, these locations will create a connected network linking some of Dubai's busiest business, tourism and residential districts.
By connecting key destinations through electric air taxis, city officials aim to dramatically shorten journey times compared with traditional road transport, especially during peak traffic hours.
The expansion also reinforces Dubai's long-term investment in smart mobility and sustainable transportation technologies.
When services become available, booking an air taxi is expected to be straightforward and familiar for residents and visitors alike.
Passengers will be able to reserve flights using:
The Uber app
The official RTA mobile application
A dedicated Joby app that is expected to launch ahead of commercial operations
The journey will also include seamless onward travel. After landing, passengers will be able to connect directly to an Uber ride to complete the final part of their journey, creating a door-to-door transport experience.
While official ticket prices have yet to be confirmed, Joby has indicated that fares are expected to be broadly comparable to Uber Black pricing.
The company has also acknowledged that prices could initially be higher when the service launches, reflecting the early stages of commercial deployment. Over time, as operations expand and passenger volumes increase, the goal is to make air taxi travel more affordable and accessible.
Dubai continues to work toward launching commercial air taxi services before the end of 2026, although authorities have not announced a specific opening date.
The approval of the first vertiport represents a crucial step in preparing the supporting infrastructure needed before passenger flights can begin.
For those eager to see the technology up close, a flying taxi model is already on display at Dubai's Museum of the Future, offering visitors a glimpse into what could soon become part of everyday travel in the emirate.
As construction progresses across additional locations and operational planning continues, Dubai appears well positioned to lead the global rollout of urban electric aviation.
