It is lightweight, compact, and has features that could make some larger, more costly 4WD SUVs seem inadequate. We examine Suzuki Jimny's history, generations, models, and more in this DubiCars Car Spotlight article.
Did you know that a little Japanese company you may not even be familiar with is responsible for creating the Suzuki Jimny? Here, Mitsubishi also has a part to play. Let's dive right in and examine the intriguing history of the Suzuki Jimny, following its development over the years and emphasizing the salient characteristics of each generation.
When you hear the name Suzuki Jimny, you probably picture a fearless little SUV navigating some challenging terrain. The Suzuki Jimny is renowned today for its off-road abilities. But its origins are not very lofty. Honestly, Suzuki never imagined it would be as successful as it is now.
A small, reliable 4WD car called the HopeStar ON360 was created in the 1960s by the Hope Motor Company, an automobile manufacturer. An engine from Mitsubishi measuring 359cc and built in two strokes per cylinder propelled it. The tiny engine generated 32 Nm and slightly more than 20 horsepower. Doors were nonexistent on the ON360. Of the ON360, the brand only sold roughly 45 pieces.
The design rights to the ON360 were sold by Hope Motor Company to Suzuki in 1968, and Suzuki subsequently started working on the Jimny, an ON360 copy.
In 1970, Suzuki introduced the LJ10 or first-generation Jimny. Originally intended for farmers and outdoor enthusiasts, the LJ10's lightweight and compact design soon made it popular for its off-road capabilities. Suzuki even swapped out the Mitsubishi engine for this updated Hope ON360 model.
Rather, it was propelled by a Suzuki 359cc, two-stroke, two-cylinder engine. Since it was a Kei car, it was the smallest and had the lowest taxes. Suzuki was taken aback by the way the Jimny was received by the market. Even the Mitsubishi Jeep, which was leading the market at the time, was outsold.
Suzuki launched several updates and facelifts for the Jimny as part of their ongoing improvement efforts. The first model, known as the LJ20, was introduced in 1972. With the launch of the SJ10 in 1975, exports were formally started. Suzuki introduced the SJ20 in 1977; in some areas, it was marketed as the LJ80 and Jimny 8.
The second generation of the Jimny, which had a more contemporary look and better performance, was unveiled by Suzuki in 1981. Over the years, it went by a number of names in various markets. This version had a more sophisticated suspension system and a larger, more potent 1.0-liter inline-4 engine.
As the Jimny began to gain traction in a number of foreign markets, this generation saw Suzuki's global expansion. Its small size, strong off-road capabilities, and reasonable price all helped to make it well-liked across the globe.
A revised Jimny featuring a massive 1.3-liter G-series engine debuted in a number of markets during the 1990s. These engines were renowned for being reliable and easily adjustable. The Jimny started winning off-road competitions and rally stages, and off-road enthusiasts continue to love this generation of vehicles to this day.
The Suzuki Samurai, Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, Suzuki Sierra, and Suzuki Super Jimny were other names for this generation. Even though it was no longer produced for export, it continued to be produced in Spain until 2004, Indonesia until 2005, and India until 2019. Even now, it continues to be a pillar of the Indian armed forces.
When the third generation was unveiled in 1998, it represented a dramatic change from the conventional boxy style of its forerunners. Without losing its ability to go off-road, Jimny's style evolved into one that was more rounded and contemporary.
This generation kept the G13B inline-4 1.3-liter engine. Nevertheless, a subsequent update introduced a 1.5-liter unit in some areas. The Jimny's interior was updated with additional features for convenience and comfort. The third generation was still tough, but it also appealed to city drivers looking for a small SUV with a bit of adventure in it.
The fourth generation of the Suzuki Jimny, which debuted in 2018, has maintained its appeal to fans all over the world. This model incorporates contemporary features and technologies into a distinctive boxy design that pays homage to the original LJ series.
At first, the only three-door model with a short wheelbase was offered. Suzuki released a five-door model in 2023, which increased its allure. It has a contemporary 1.5-liter K15B engine with 103 horsepower and 138 Nm of torque. It can be mated to a 5-speed AMT gearbox or a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Its powerful off-road capabilities are a result of the three-link rigid axle suspension, ladder-frame chassis, and part-time four-wheel drive. The fourth-generation Jimny is still a tough and competent off-road vehicle, despite its modernization. Its charm, small size, and outstanding off-road capabilities have made it a cult favorite.
A small group of enthusiasts in the United Arab Emirates are huge fans of the second-generation Jimny and have brought a few of them in. That isn't nearly as well-liked as the fourth generation, though.
The fourth-generation Suzuki Jimny is unrivaled in its capacity to travel long distances on the highway and tackle some dunes in the desert, all while maintaining efficiency, comfort, and affordability.
