Jay-Z's car collection reflects his journey from humble beginnings to immense success.
His collection includes a diverse range of luxury vehicles, from Bentleys and Ferraris to Maybachs and Rolls-Royces.
Jay-Z's taste in cars has evolved over the years, showcasing his status and success in hip-hop and business.
The collection includes iconic cars featured in his music videos and personal favorites, such as the Maybach Exelero and Bentley Azure.
Security and exclusivity are prioritized, with armored SUVs like the Dartz Prombron adding to the collection.
JAY-Z, born on December 4, 1969, in Brooklyn, New York, is an American rapper and entrepreneur. He is one of the most influential figures in hip-hop from the 1990s and the early 21st century.
Shawn Carter grew up in the tough Marcy Projects in Brooklyn, mainly raised by his mother. His experiences with drug dealing influenced his lyrics when he started rapping under the name Jazzy, later shortened to Jay-Z (possibly inspired by the nearby J and Z subway lines). Jay-Z and two friends started Roc-A-Fella Records to release his debut album, "Reasonable Doubt" (1996), which eventually sold over a million copies in the U.S.
Billionaire rapper and entrepreneur Jay-Z gave a rare interview to CBS Mornings' co-host Gayle King, which aired last week on CBS. In the hour-long interview, they toured The Book of HOV exhibit at the Brooklyn Public Library, celebrating his career.
During the interview, King asked Jay-Z to settle a social media debate about choosing between $500,000 cash or having dinner with him. Jay-Z advised, "You gotta take the money.... I wouldn't tell you to cut a bad deal."
As of November 2023, Forbes reports Jay-Z's net worth at $2.5 billion. Together with his wife, Beyoncé, their combined net worth is about $3 billion. Jay-Z became the first billionaire rapper in 2019, earning his fortune through music and successful business ventures.
Rapper Jay-Z was born Shawn Corey Carter on December 4, 1969, in Brooklyn, New York. His mother, Gloria Carter, recalled that he was the only one of her four children who didn't cause her pain during birth, making her feel he was special. Jay-Z's father, Adnes Reeves, left the family when Jay-Z was 11. He was then raised by his mother in the Marcy Projects, a tough area in Brooklyn.
Jay-Z had a difficult youth, dealing drugs and facing gun violence, experiences he later rapped about in his songs. He went to Eli Whitney High School in Brooklyn, where he was classmates with future rap legend Notorious B.I.G. Reflecting on his childhood in the song "December 4th," Jay-Z noted, "I went to school, got good grades, could behave when I wanted/ But I had demons deep inside that would raise when confronted."
Jay-Z started his career by selling copies of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, out of his car, an off-white Lexus, on 8th Street in Brooklyn in 1996. He used money from selling drugs to buy the car. Knowing that dealing drugs was risky, he eventually focused on his music career and invested in legitimate businesses. Despite his success, he still had sentimental value for the Lexus, using it in a music video and even driving it onto the stage for a performance in 2006.
Jay-Z featured his beloved Ferrari in his 2006 music video "Show Me What You Got." Directed by F. Gary Gray, the video was shot on the Monaco Grand Prix circuit. In the video, Jay-Z hands the driving duties to professional racer Dale Earnhardt Jr. The Ferrari F430, with its powerful V8 engine and agile handling, is perfect for navigating the twists and turns of Monte Carlo's streets.
During the filming of "Show Me What You Got," Jay-Z and Dale Earnhardt Jr. were joined on the F1 track by IndyCar's Danica Patrick, who was driving a manual Pagani Zonda. The Pagani Zonda F, owned by Jay-Z, boasts a powerful AMG V12 engine with 641bhp. Named after racing legend Fangio, who won the Monaco GP twice, only 25 of these cars were ever built, adding to its value in Jay-Z and Beyoncé's collection.
Jay-Z's Bugatti Veyron stands out as one of the pioneering hypercars, renowned for its extraordinary top speed of 253mph. Its awe-inspiring performance is attributed to its quad-turbocharged 8.0 W16 engine, generating a staggering 1,190 bhp. This remarkable vehicle, valued at £1.75m, holds a special significance for Jay-Z, as it was a lavish gift from his wife to celebrate his 40th birthday. The Veyron has not only captured attention on the road but has also inspired Jay-Z's music, with lyrics like those in "Heaven," where he humorously ponders how he, at 6'2", fits into such a luxurious and powerful car.
Jay-Z, a billionaire artist, has invested in various ventures like Uber, real estate, art, Tidal streaming, and Armand de Brignac Champagne. However, his ownership of the Maybach Exelero, a unique coupe built in 2004, might not be his wisest investment. Originally a show car, it boasts a twin-turbo V12 engine with 690bhp and a top speed of 218mph. Reportedly purchased by rapper Birdman for $8m, Jay-Z later helped him out by offering to buy it. The Exelero also features prominently in Jay-Z's 2006 music video "The Lost One."
Jay-Z enjoys spending time with his daughter, Blue Ivy, in his red Corvette, the only American car in his collection. This 1950s icon, the C1 'Vette, almost got canceled due to mixed reviews of early models. However, by 1957, Chevy improved it and added a sportier 4.6-liter V8 engine. While most of Jay-Z's albums have been critically acclaimed, his 2006 album "Kingdom Come" received a lukewarm response despite going double platinum in the US.
Maybachs not only offer lots of legroom and smooth V12 engines, but they also sound great in rap lyrics. Jay-Z often mentions the car in his songs and teamed up with Rick Ross for the track "Maybach Music." Lyrics include, "Realest shit I ever wrote, chillin’ in my Maybach; eight-track episodes, been doing this since way back." Jay-Z once owned both the long 62S model and the shorter 57S model. He and Kanye West even modified a 2004 Maybach 57 for their Grammy-winning "Otis" music video, turning it into a wild custom car with wing doors, a relocated front grille, and a large fire-spitting exhaust.
Maybachs are a bit outdated now. Hip-hop elites have shifted back to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, especially since the release of its eighth version in 2017. This beautifully crafted car includes an art gallery above the glove compartment and a stereo camera that scans the road ahead to adjust the suspension for bumps. As Jay-Z raps in "No Hook": “Rolls-Royce keeps my movements smooth while navigating through all the mess and hardship I grew up in.”
In 1998, for his album Vol.2… Hard Knock Life, Jay-Z had photographer Jonathan Mannion capture him in front of the Marcy Projects, posing with a new Bentley Azure convertible. This moment symbolized his success, and Bentleys have remained special to him since then. Recently, he acquired the latest Continental GT and reflected on the past in his 4:44 track "Smile": “Slammin’ Bentley doors like we invented doors, 20 years ago we drove Bentley Azures.”
The Dartz Prombron, perfect for “Big Pimpin’,” is an armored SUV from Latvia. It initially sparked controversy for offering upholstery made from whale foreskin. Priced at nearly £1 million, it aimed to be the world's most expensive 4x4. The high cost is due to materials like Mississippi alligator, white gold, diamonds, and rubies, along with bullet-proof windows, a tungsten exhaust, and a Kevlar exterior that can withstand AK47 fire and rocket attacks. With Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s wealth and status, they aren't compromising on security.
Jay-Z's car collection reflects his journey from humble beginnings to immense success. From his early days hustling in Brooklyn to becoming a billionaire mogul, Jay-Z's taste in cars has evolved, encompassing a diverse range of luxury vehicles that symbolize his status and success in the world of hip-hop and business. Each car in his collection tells a story, from the iconic Maybachs and Rolls-Royces to the armored SUVs like the Dartz Prombron. Through his cars, Jay-Z showcases his love for luxury, style, and innovation, while also prioritizing security and exclusivity.
